Chapter 4

Adrian Kessler and I had hated each other politely for twenty-two years.

No war.

No blood feud.

Just competing territory, clubs, contracts, and men.

He preferred leverage to violence.

So did I.

Usually.

The Crown Room belonged to him.

If Maribel arranged the game there, Adrian knew.

I called him.

He answered immediately.

“Claudio.”

“Why was my son playing in your room?”

“Because your son asked.”

“No.”

Silence.

“Try again.”

Adrian sighed.

“Maribel asked.”

There.

Confirmed.

“What did she offer you?”

“A conversation.”

“With whom?”

“You.”

I almost laughed.

“She gambled my granddaughter’s treatment money to get me on the phone?”

“Not quite.”

Adrian sounded amused.

“She wanted Owen broken.”

My jaw tightened.

“Why?”

“Because a broken son makes an old father step back into the house.”

That stopped me.

Maribel had noticed something no one else had.

I was semi-retired operationally.

Still head.

Still final authority.

But I spent more time at the lake estate.

More with Lena.

Less at tables.

Owen had gradually become visible as successor.

Not officially.

Naturally.

Maribel wanted me active again.

Why?

Adrian answered before I asked.

“She thinks Owen is too weak to protect her.”

“From what?”

Silence.

Then:

“From you.”

I almost smiled.

That was absurd.

Until it wasn’t.

“What does she think I know?”

Adrian paused.

“The clinic.”

My attention sharpened.

“The Vision Center?”

“Yes.”

“What about it?”

“You built it on land that used to belong to the Kessler family.”

I knew that.

Bought cleanly seventeen years earlier.

Adrian continued.

“My father didn’t sell it voluntarily.”

I went still.

That was new.

“He lost it.”

“To whom?”

“Your wife.”

My late wife, Elena Sterling.

The woman who built the clinic.

Adrian’s voice softened.

“She won it in a card game.”

The room went quiet around me.

Apparently gambling had not entered Lena’s life through Owen.

It had been buried inside the clinic from the beginning.
