Chapter 12

Vivian apologized to Lena too.

Not because Lena knew her role.

She didn’t.

Vivian apologized for participating in adult choices that helped create the situation.

Age-appropriate.

No conspiracy dump.

No Elena history.

Lena asked:

“Did you throw cane?”

“No.”

“Did you tell Maribel?”

Vivian hesitated.

“Things that made her angry.”

Lena frowned.

“Why?”

Good question.

Vivian looked at me.

I did not rescue her.

“Because I was angry at your grandma.”

Lena knew Elena only through stories.

“Grandma dead.”

“Yes.”

“Why angry?”

Vivian smiled sadly.

“Because sometimes people stay angry even when the other person can’t hear them anymore.”

That was unexpectedly good.

Lena considered.

“Then tell picture.”

I almost laughed.

Vivian did too.

“What?”

“Tell Grandma picture you mad.”

Child solution.

We actually did.

That evening Vivian stood in front of Elena’s portrait in my study.

“This is ridiculous.”

“Lena’s idea.”

“She’s five.”

“And apparently our therapist.”

Vivian looked at the portrait.

Then said:

“I hated how right you were.”

Silence.

“I hated that Claudio believed you faster.”

More.

“I hated that you built something beautiful on the same kind of bad decision I got punished for.”

There.

She cried.

I did too.

Elena did not answer.

Obviously.

But Vivian finally said the words without turning them into someone else’s wound.

That mattered.

Before leaving, she touched the frame.

“You still dressed terribly.”

May you like

I laughed.

Elena would have approved of that insult.
