Chapter 5

Elena never told me.

That hurt more than it should have.

She told me the clinic property came through a private purchase.

Technically true.

Apparently incomplete.

Adrian’s father, Victor Kessler, had been a gambler.

Not casually.

Compulsively.

One night he lost the land to Elena.

She had joined the game intending to stop him from losing it to someone worse.

She won.

Then offered to sell it back for one dollar if Victor entered treatment and stayed away from the tables.

He refused.

Pride.

So Elena used the land.

Built the clinic.

Adrian hated her for years.

Then eventually understood what she had tried to do.

I asked:

“Why tell Maribel?”

“I didn’t.”

Interesting.

“Then how did she know?”

“Someone found the old game book.”

The Crown Room archived every major stake from decades past.

One ledger disappeared six months ago.

Maribel somehow obtained pages.

She learned Elena had won the land through gambling.

Then built a narrative for Owen.

His mother’s greatest charitable legacy began with a wager.

Therefore gambling was not corruption.

It was Sterling tradition.

I almost admired the manipulation.

Almost.

“Did Owen know?”

“Yes.”

Of course.

Adrian continued.

Maribel told Owen that if he could win big enough, he would recover money lost through several bad investments and prove he could expand the clinic rather than drain it.

But the game was stacked.

Not mechanically.

Psychologically.

Each player knew Owen’s limits.

Each pushed.

Julian won the final hand legitimately.

The setup was making sure Owen reached it.

“Why would Maribel want him to lose?”

Adrian became quiet.

“Because she wasn’t trying to save Owen.”

“Then what?”

“She was trying to expose Elena.”

I frowned.

“She’s dead.”

“Yes.”

“Why does that matter?”

Adrian answered:

“Because Lena’s treatment fund came from Elena’s private trust.”

My pulse slowed.

And if that trust became tainted inside the family narrative—

Maribel could argue the clinic, the land, and Lena’s money all came from a gambling debt owed to Kessler.

Not legally.

We did not need courts.

Inside family honor.

That was enough.

“She wants the clinic returned.”

“No.”

Adrian corrected me.

“She wants you to believe returning it is the only way to restore honor.”

Then I understood.

May you like

Maribel was not working for Adrian.

She was using his family grievance to force me into surrendering the one institution Lena depended on most.
