Chapter 8

Julian returned the treatment money.

Not because I threatened him.

Because he never intended to keep it.

That surprised everyone except Adrian.

The final hand had been Julian’s way of stopping Owen before another player took the clinic outright.

He had known the game was spiraling.

So he won hard.

Everything.

Then held it.

I looked at him.

“You could have called me.”

“You would have stopped the game.”

“Yes.”

“That would have taught Owen nothing.”

I stared.

“So you decided to parent my son?”

Julian smiled.

“Badly.”

At least he knew.

I accepted the money.

Not gratitude.

Not forgiveness.

The clinic stake was void inside our family because Owen never had authority to pledge it.

His table seat?

Different.

He had put his Sterling token down voluntarily.

I kept it.

Owen looked at me.

“You’re taking my seat.”

“No.”

I placed the brass token on my desk.

“You surrendered it.”

That hurt more.

Good.

Responsibility without exaggeration.

He could earn another role later.

Not by blood.

Not by apology.

By behavior.

Then Julian told me one final thing.

Maribel had not acted alone.

Of course.

“Who?”

He hesitated.

“Your sister.”

I went still.

I had one sister.

Vivian Sterling.

Fifty-seven.

Living in Charleston.

Supposedly retired from family business for fifteen years.

“What did Vivian do?”

“She introduced Maribel to Adrian’s old ledger keeper.”

Silence.

My own sister gave Maribel the history that poisoned Owen.

Why?

Julian shrugged.

“Ask her.”

I called immediately.

Vivian answered.

“Claudio.”

“Why did you give Maribel the Kessler story?”

Silence.

Then:

“Because someone needed to make you stop pretending Elena was a saint.”

That hurt.

Not because I believed Elena was perfect.

Because resentment had survived in my sister long enough to reach my granddaughter.

“What did Elena do to you?”

Vivian laughed bitterly.

“Ask why I left Sterling.”

I had always thought she chose Charleston.

Apparently another family story was about to split open.
