Chapter 16

At seven, Lena climbed the hotel stairs where the billiard lounge incident had happened.

Not because of therapy.

Because she wanted cake from the restaurant upstairs and the elevator was crowded.

Her cane tapped each step.

Owen walked behind.

Not touching.

That mattered.

I walked beside him.

At the lounge doorway, Lena stopped.

“Here?”

She remembered acoustics more than visuals.

“Yes.”

“The trash cane place?”

“Yes.”

Owen closed his eyes.

Lena entered.

The cue rack had been replaced.

Same billiard table.

Different wastebasket.

She walked toward it.

Tapped.

Found the edge.

Then laughed.

“Tiny.”

I frowned.

“What?”

“Trash.”

Apparently memory had made it enormous.

Children do that.

Adults too.

She asked where the cane had landed.

I showed her.

She touched the rim with one hand.

Then dropped a candy wrapper inside.

“Trash for trash.”

Perfect.

Owen laughed through tears.

I did too.

We stayed ten minutes.

No reenactment.

No speech.

Then Lena got bored.

“Cake.”

Exactly.

Outside, Owen said:

“I thought coming back would destroy me.”

“It didn’t.”

“No.”

He looked toward the lounge.

“It was smaller.”

Most old horrors are.

Not emotionally.

May you like

Physically.

The room that once felt like the whole world eventually becomes one room again.
