Chapter 7

The ride away from the Bellini estate was executed with flawless, terrifying precision. The convoy of black, armored SUVs tore through the winding, tree-lined roads of the American northeast, putting miles between Sarah and the smoking ruins of her father-in-law’s pride.
Inside the primary vehicle, the bright, natural light of the afternoon sun filtered through the tinted windows, casting a soft, rosy glow over the leather interior. Sarah sat in the plush rear seat, completely relaxed. Her tailored black evening suit remained pristine. She held a sleek tablet in her lap, her fingers moving rapidly as she finalized the transfer of the Bellini offshore accounts into untraceable shell corporations.
Lily was curled up comfortably beside her, completely exhausted by the adrenaline of the afternoon. The three-year-old had kicked off her flats and was resting her head on Sarah’s leg, her elegant dinner dress bunched around her knees.
On the opposite seat, seven-year-old Ethan sat stiffly, his hands folded in his lap. He stared out the window, his fair skin pale with anxiety.
"Are we kidnapped, Aunt Sarah?" Ethan asked quietly, his young American accent trembling slightly.
Sarah locked her tablet and set it aside. She leaned forward, her diamond earrings catching the sunlight, and offered the boy a warm, genuine smile—a smile she had never shown inside the walls of the Bellini estate.
"No, Ethan," Sarah said gently. "You are rescued. You are never going back to that house, and you are never going to be taught to be cruel again. From now on, you and Lily are going to grow up safe."
"Grandpa looked really mad," Ethan whispered, looking down at his polished shoes. "He said people are going to hunt us."
"Your grandfather is a loud man who relies on fear because he has no real power," Sarah explained softly, reaching out to gently squeeze the boy's knee. "There is no one coming for us, Ethan. I have made sure of that."
In the front passenger seat, Vincent turned his head, his sharp eyes meeting Sarah’s in the rearview mirror.
"The safehouse is fully prepped, Mrs. Bellini," Vincent reported smoothly. "The perimeter is secured by thirty of our best men. The digital scrub on your location was completed ten minutes ago. We are a ghost."
"Excellent work, Vincent," Sarah nodded. "Have the secondary teams initiated the asset seizures at Robert’s legitimate businesses?"
"Yes, ma'am," Vincent confirmed with a rare, predatory smirk. "The federal tip-offs regarding his money laundering operations were sent to the FBI regional office anonymously. By the time Robert finishes treating his broken jaw, the feds will be kicking down the doors of his shipping warehouses."
Sarah leaned back against the leather headrest, a profound sense of satisfaction settling over her. For two years since Daniel’s murder—a murder she knew Robert had secretly orchestrated to consolidate power—she had played the role of the beautiful, grieving, helpless widow. She had endured Helen’s psychological torture. She had endured Robert’s condescending laughter.
She had let them believe they had won, all while she meticulously learned their network, bought their lieutenants, and stole the keys to their kingdom.
"Mommy," Lily mumbled sleepily, shifting her head on Sarah’s leg. "I'm hungry. I didn't get to eat my dinner."
Sarah’s expression softened completely. She gently stroked her daughter’s fair, rosy cheek.
"I know, my sweet girl," Sarah whispered, pressing a kiss to the top of Lily's head. "When we get to our new home, the chef is going to make you the biggest, most perfect meal you have ever seen. No more burnt edges. Only the best."

"Okay," Lily sighed, closing her eyes and drifting off to sleep.
The SUV merged onto the highway, accelerating toward a heavily fortified compound hidden deep in the mountains. Sarah looked out the window, watching the bright colors of the setting sun paint the horizon. The old Bellini empire was dead. A new queen had taken the throne.
