Chapter 1

The private dining hall of the Bellini Mafia estate was bathed in a brilliant, cinematic light. Bright, vivid colors bounced off the crystal chandeliers, illuminating a room designed to showcase absolute wealth and power. At the center of the vast space sat a long family table, meticulously arranged with folded white linens, gleaming silver cutlery, and heavy wooden steak boards. Near the grand archway, a tall, decorative wheat-sheaf installation towered over a collection of lightweight harvest baskets, celebrating the autumn season in vibrant hues of gold, amber, and deep crimson.

Sarah Bellini sat quietly near the center of the table. At twenty-eight, she possessed a striking, effortless beauty that adhered perfectly to American standards of elegance. Her fair, rosy skin was flawless, contrasting sharply with the tailored black evening suit she wore as a quiet testament to her widowhood. Heavy diamond earrings caught the bright light with her every movement, and a gleaming wristwatch peeked out from beneath her tailored cuff. Beside her sat her three-year-old daughter, Lily, who looked like a porcelain doll in an elegant dinner dress, a soft cream cardigan, tights, and tiny flats.

On the other side of the table sat seven-year-old Ethan, Lily’s cousin, dressed immaculately in formal dinner clothing and polished shoes.

The heavy, rolling carved serving cart rattled against the hardwood floor as Helen Bellini navigated it toward the children. At sixty-four, Daniel’s mother wore an expensive, intricately embroidered dinner outfit. Her fair skin was powdered and immaculate, adorned with heavy pearl jewelry and glittering rings.

"Alright, my handsome boy, let us get you served," Helen announced, her voice carrying a thick, wealthy American accent.

Helen used a pair of silver tongs to lift a perfectly cooked, thick, butter-covered steak from the stacked silver trays. She placed it gently onto Ethan’s wooden board. The meat was succulent, steaming, and cooked to absolute perfection.

"Thank you, Grandma," Ethan said, picking up his fork with a bright smile.

"Only the best cuts for the men of this family," Helen replied, patting his cheek affectionately.

She then pushed the rolling carved serving cart toward Sarah and Lily. Helen’s warm, grandmotherly smile instantly hardened into a mask of polite cruelty. She reached past the remaining premium cuts on the silver tray and used her tongs to retrieve a completely blackened, charred, and ruined piece of meat. With a careless flick of her wrist, she dropped the burned steak onto Lily’s pristine porcelain plate. The hard, charred meat landed with a dull, heavy thud.

Helen looked down at the three-year-old girl, her lips curling into a mocking, unapologetic smile. Her rosy cheeks bunched up as she offered a flimsy, sarcastic excuse that was designed solely to humiliate.

"It’s just a little overcooked," Helen said, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. "I am sure a tough little girl like you won't mind the crunch. It builds character, doesn't it, Sarah?"

Sarah did not blink. She kept her hands resting lightly on her lap, the heavy diamond of her wedding ring catching the light. She stared at her mother-in-law, her mind working with a cold, terrifying precision that the older woman was too arrogant to recognize.

"She is three years old, Helen," Sarah said, her voice perfectly level, carrying the crisp, clear cadence of an American upbringing. "She requires proper nourishment, not the scraps you scrape off the bottom of the grill."

"She will eat what she is served," Helen snapped back, turning her nose up. "Beggars cannot be choosers in this house."
