Chapter 4

Robert Bellini’s rosy face contorted into a mask of pure, unhinged fury. The sixty-eight-year-old Mafia elder had ruled his syndicate for three decades through absolute fear and violent intimidation. To be mocked in his own dining hall, in front of his capos and his bleeding wife, was a transgression that could only be answered with blood.

With a guttural roar, Robert charged toward Sarah.

He moved with a terrifying, aggressive speed for a man of his age, his polished leather shoes thudding heavily against the hardwood floor. He crossed the distance between the head of the table and Sarah in seconds, his hands curling into massive, heavy fists. The old family ring on his finger caught the bright, cinematic light like brass knuckles.

He swung a massive, sweeping right hook aimed directly at Sarah’s jaw.

But Sarah was not the fragile widow he believed her to be. Before Daniel’s death, she had been trained by the most lethal enforcers in her own father's syndicate. She had been hiding her physical capabilities just as meticulously as she had been hiding her financial maneuvers.

As Robert’s heavy fist sailed through the air, Sarah simply slipped outside the punch.

She stepped fluidly to her left, her high heels pivoting effortlessly on the floorboards. Robert’s fist sailed harmlessly through the empty air where her head had been a fraction of a second before, throwing his entire center of gravity wildly forward.

Before Robert could recover his balance, Sarah planted her back foot, twisted her hips, and drove one explosive, devastating counterpunch directly across his face.

The sickening crunch of bone echoed through the dining hall. The kinetic force behind Sarah’s strike was absolute, fueled by years of suppressed rage and the primal need to protect her daughter.

Robert’s eyes rolled back. The sheer power of the blow lifted him slightly off his feet, spinning him violently backward. His arms flailed as he lost all spatial awareness.

He stumbled wildly across the floor and spun backward directly into the tall, decorative wheat-sheaf installation standing near the archway.

The impact was catastrophic. Lightweight harvest baskets, filled to the brim with decorative gourds and autumn leaves, burst from their elevated stands, raining down across the floor. The towering, bundled decorative stalks of wheat collapsed entirely around him, burying him in a cloud of dry, golden debris. Heavy wooden display crates overturned with a loud crash, splintering against the hardwood.

Robert crashed heavily through the folding lower frame of the installation, his massive body hitting the floor with a terrifying, echoing thud.

There was no dialogue. The entire dining hall remained absolutely, horrifyingly silent. The bright, cinematic colors of the harvest decorations were now scattered and broken, a chaotic frame around the fallen patriarch.

Sarah slowly lowered her fist, her tailored black suit barely wrinkled by the explosive movement. She adjusted the cuff of her sleeve, her diamond wristwatch gleaming in the light. She took a slow, deep breath, her chest rising and falling rhythmically, as she surveyed the absolute destruction she had just unleashed upon the heads of the Bellini family.
