Chapter 10

The sun reached its peak, washing the mountain compound in brilliant, crisp light. Sarah stood alone on the expansive glass balcony overlooking the dense pine forests below. The air was cool and fresh, a stark contrast to the oppressive, suffocating atmosphere of the Bellini estate she had left behind.
She held a cup of black coffee in her hands, her diamond ring catching the sunlight. Inside the compound, she could hear the faint, joyous sounds of Lily and Ethan laughing in the kitchen. It was a sound that had been entirely absent from their lives for far too long.
A soft chime interrupted the peace of the morning.
Sarah reached into her pocket and pulled out her secure, encrypted smartphone. The caller ID was a string of masked numbers, but she knew exactly who was on the other end of the line. She swiped the screen to answer, pressing the phone to her ear. She did not speak.
"You think you’ve won, Sarah," Robert’s voice rasped through the speaker. He sounded old, broken, and agonizingly desperate. His words were slightly slurred from the swelling of his shattered jaw.
"I don't think I have won, Robert," Sarah replied, her voice a low, melodic whisper that carried the lethal promise of an apex predator. "I know I have won."
"The feds are sitting at my gates," Robert wheezed, coughing heavily into the receiver. "Helen is hysterical. My accounts are frozen. You took my grandson. You took my empire. What more do you want?"
"I want you to understand exactly what you threw away," Sarah said coldly, sipping her coffee. "You had a daughter-in-law who would have remained quiet forever. You had a granddaughter who just wanted a place at your table. But your arrogance and your cruelty blinded you to the danger standing right in front of you."
"Sarah, please," Robert begged, his pride entirely evaporated in the face of federal prison and absolute ruin. "Let's make a deal. Tell the feds the ledgers were faked. Send Ethan back. I'll step down. I'll let you run the operations. Just... just don't let me die in a cage."
Sarah looked out over the vast, sweeping mountains, her fair and rosy face a mask of absolute, chilling indifference. She thought of the charred steak dropped onto her three-year-old daughter's plate. She thought of the cruel laughter that echoed in the dining hall.
"The time for making deals ended when you starved my daughter for your own amusement," Sarah said softly.
"Sarah! You are a Bellini! You can't do this to your own family!" Robert screamed into the phone, panic tearing his voice apart.
"I am a Bellini," Sarah agreed smoothly. "And tomorrow, the Bellini family falls. The new era begins now."
She pulled the phone away from her ear, ignoring Robert’s frantic, desperate shouting, and tapped the red button to end the call.

She stood on the balcony for a long moment, breathing in the crisp mountain air. She had secured the fortune, protected the children, and eliminated the threats. The board was cleared, but the game was far from over. There were rival families to deal with, federal agents to manipulate, and an empire to rebuild from the ashes.
But as she listened to her daughter laughing inside the safehouse, Sarah smiled. She was ready for whatever came next.
