Chapter 6

The bright, cinematic light of the dining hall seemed to focus entirely on Sarah and Lily as they turned toward the grand exit. The room was a portrait of shattered power—Helen weeping on the floor, Robert bleeding in the decorative wreckage, and the imposing white American capos standing paralyzed by the threat of explosive retaliation.
"You won't make it to the front gates, Sarah," Robert spat, holding a napkin to his bleeding face. His American accent was thick with desperation. "The perimeter guards don't care about your bank accounts. They answer to me. The moment you step outside, they will gun you down."
"I highly doubt that, Robert," Sarah replied smoothly, pausing near the archway. She didn't bother to turn around. "You see, loyalty in this business is a commodity. And I have simply outbid you."
As if on cue, the heavy mahogany doors leading to the main corridor swung open. Four men stepped into the dining hall. They were not Robert’s standard perimeter guards. They were elite, highly trained operatives wearing unmarked dark suits, their fair and rosy skin stark against the black fabric. They carried suppressed submachine guns, their weapons held at a relaxed but incredibly lethal low-ready position.
The lead operative, a tall man named Vincent with sharp, calculating eyes, nodded respectfully to Sarah.
"The perimeter is secure, Mrs. Bellini," Vincent announced, his voice echoing clearly in the quiet room. "The old guard has been relieved of their duties. The transport is waiting at the front steps."
Robert stared at Vincent, utter disbelief warping his bruised features. "Vincent? You work for me! I brought you into this family!"
"You brought me in to serve the future of the Bellini family, sir," Vincent replied coldly. "And it is quite clear that the future is holding the little girl's hand, not bleeding in a pile of fake wheat."
"You traitor!" Helen screamed from the floor, throwing a shattered piece of porcelain at the operative. It missed wildly, clattering against the wall. "I'll see you all burn for this!"
"Take Ethan," Sarah suddenly commanded, her voice cutting through Helen's hysteria.
Vincent stepped forward, moving toward the seven-year-old boy who had been sitting frozen in his chair throughout the entire violent ordeal. Ethan looked terrified, his formal dinner clothing pristine compared to the wreckage around him.
"What? No!" Helen shrieked, scrambling to her feet. "You leave my grandson alone! You can't take him!"
"I am not leaving a child in a house run by incompetent, abusive dinosaurs," Sarah stated, her eyes narrowing with fierce, maternal protection. "Ethan is coming with me. He will be raised with respect, not taught to laugh while a three-year-old is handed charred garbage."
Vincent gently placed a hand on Ethan’s shoulder. "Come on, kid. Time to go."
Ethan didn't fight. He looked at his grandmother, then at his bleeding grandfather, and quietly slipped out of his chair, walking over to stand beside Lily and Sarah.
"If you walk out that door, Sarah," Robert wheezed, his rage finally breaking through his fear, "there won't be a safe place on this earth for you to hide. The commission will hunt you down for fracturing the family."
Sarah looked back at the fallen patriarch one last time. Her tailored black suit cut a striking, elegant silhouette against the bright lights.
May you like
"I am not fracturing the family, Robert," Sarah said, her voice a deadly, quiet promise. "I am purging it. Tell the commission whatever you like. By the time they finish investigating your stolen pension funds, you will be in federal prison. Assuming you survive the night."
With a final, dismissive glance, Sarah turned her back on the old regime. Holding Lily’s hand in her right, and keeping Ethan close on her left, she walked out of the dining hall, flanked by her new army.
