Chapter 9

The paralyzing silence stretched, amplifying the soft, ambient sounds of the room—the hum of the air conditioning, the faint clinking of ice in crystal glasses. No one at the massive, crowded table dared to speak or resume their meal. The natural, cinematic lighting offered no shadows for Celeste to retreat into; her public humiliation was entirely visible, broadcasted to the most dangerous men in America.

"I... I don't know what you want me to say, Adrian," Celeste finally whispered, her voice stripped of its arrogant polish. She looked down at the pristine white tablecloth, unable to maintain eye contact with his perceptive, cold eyes.

"I want you to sit in silence," Adrian replied, his measured words cutting through the air. "And I want you to reflect on the fact that your position at this table is a privilege, not a divine right. A privilege that can be permanently revoked."

Celeste flinched as if she had been physically struck. She slumped back into her chair, the picture of defeated, humiliated obedience.

Adrian did not release Helen’s hand. He kept his grip firm and reassuring as he slowly turned his gaze away from his fiancée, sweeping his eyes across the hundreds of guests.

"Enjoy your dinner," Adrian commanded, his voice returning to a steady, authoritative resonance.

It was an order, not a suggestion. Slowly, hesitantly, the guests began to turn back to their plates. The dull, muted clatter of silverware resumed, followed by the quiet, nervous murmurs of conversation. The live orchestra, taking their cue from the shifting atmosphere, tentatively began to play a soft, classical piece, trying to weave a sense of normalcy back into the bright, warm room.

Grace Miller stepped smoothly forward, her professional demeanor flawlessly intact. The beautiful housemaid reached for a heavy silver pitcher of ice water resting on the table.

"Allow me to pour you a fresh glass, Miss Helen," Grace said, her American accent warm and entirely respectful.

"Thank you, my dear," Helen replied, her voice still thick with emotion, though the trembling in her free hand had noticeably subsided.

Grace poured the water, her neat low bun and white collar presenting a picture of absolute, polished elegance. As she finished, she briefly locked eyes with Adrian.

"Thank you, Grace," Adrian said, the volume low enough that only the three of them could hear it. It was a genuine acknowledgment of her defiance against Celeste's orders, a recognition of her loyalty to his true family.

"It is my honor, Mr. Sterling," Grace replied softly, bowing her head slightly before stepping back to assume her position against the wall.

Celeste watched the exchange from the corner of her eye. Her fair skin flushed a dark, angry crimson. She realized, with sickening clarity, that a common housemaid held more of her fiancé's respect than she did. The seeds of a deep, venomous hatred for Grace were instantly planted in Celeste's heart, promising a violent retaliation the moment Adrian was no longer watching.
