Chapter 3

The medium wide shot of the grand dining hall captured the stunning, cinematic lighting in all its glory. The gentle golden glow of the crystal chandeliers illuminated the clean whites of the table settings and the polished highlights of the silver cutlery. As Grace Miller gently guided Helen Sterling into the crowded room, the conversation among the White American guests continued in a steady, cheerful hum.
Grace navigated the space with polished elegance, her slim fitted silhouette moving seamlessly between the seated guests until they reached the head of the table.
"Right this way, Miss Helen," Grace murmured quietly, keeping a supportive hand near the older woman's elbow.
They approached the single empty chair situated directly to the left of Adrian’s seat. Adrian was currently listening to a low-spoken report from a capo leaning over his right shoulder, but his cold, perceptive eyes tracked Grace and his aunt from the moment they entered his peripheral vision.
Grace reached out with a steady hand and pulled out the empty chair for Helen.
Helen smiled nervously, her fair, rosy cheeks flushing with apprehension. She reached toward the polished wooden back of the chair, her hand trembling violently in the bright light.
Suddenly, Celeste moved.
With her carefully maintained social poise completely intact, Celeste reached across the table. She placed her palm flat over the unused place setting, her manicured fingers pressing firmly against the pristine white linen. She shot Grace a hard, warning look, her eyes flashing with silent, venomous reprimand.
"Miss Celeste?" Grace asked, her voice calm but questioning, keeping her American accent perfectly professional. "I am seating Miss Helen."
"I see that, Grace," Celeste said softly, her voice barely carrying past their immediate circle, yet laced with absolute authority. "But as I instructed you earlier today, Helen is not feeling well enough to join us in such a crowded environment. You may escort her back to her wing."
"I feel perfectly fine, Celeste," Helen spoke up, her voice fragile but attempting to assert itself. "I just wanted to be here for Adrian."
"We appreciate the sentiment, Helen," Celeste replied, her smile tight and unyielding. "But this is a highly sensitive evening. We cannot risk any unfortunate disruptions."
Helen looked down at her trembling hand, which was still hovering near the back of the chair. The cruel implication hung heavily in the air.

"Please, Celeste," Helen whispered, her eyes pleading. "I won't be a bother."
Adrian, having finished his conversation with the capo, slowly turned his head. His thick, slightly wavy hair caught the polished highlights of the chandelier above. He noticed his aunt instantly withdraw her trembling hand from the chair, shrinking back as if she had been physically struck. The air around the head of the table grew incredibly tense, the bright video colors of the room contrasting sharply with the dark, suffocating emotional warfare occurring in plain sight.
