Chapter 1

The engagement dinner was a masterclass in calculated perfection, bathed in bright, airy, luminous colors that cast a soft, elegant warmth across the grand estate. The massive indoor ballroom was brilliantly illuminated by towering crystal chandeliers, their clean, clear lighting meticulously balanced to provide a slightly warm white glow. There was no heavy yellow cast, no muddy orange tint, and absolutely no dark or dull tones to hide within; sufficient illumination clearly revealed the entire room, polishing the highlights of the crystal glassware and the pristine, clean whites of the table linens.

At the head of the impossibly long table sat Adrian Sterling. At forty-one, he was a Mafia boss whose presence dictated the very air pressure of the room. He was handsome as a movie star, deeply masculine, with powerful, broad shoulders that filled out his tailored dark three-piece suit. His angular face was defined by a high-bridged nose, a sharply defined jawline, and extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble. His thick, slightly wavy hair was naturally swept back, though a few loose strands fell stubbornly over his forehead.

"The arrangements tonight are flawless, Adrian," remarked Thomas, one of his senior lieutenants, his crisp American accent carrying over the gentle hum of the crowded party. Thomas’s fair, rosy skin glowed healthily in the brilliant light. "I don't think the East Coast families have ever seen a display quite like this."

"Flawless is the minimum expectation, Thomas," Adrian replied. His voice was deep, quiet, and carried a chilling weight, shaped by measured pauses that made every sentence sound cold and dangerous. "We are establishing the future of this family tonight. There is no room for error."

"And your beautiful bride-to-be certainly looks the part," Thomas added, raising his champagne glass slightly in the direction of the woman sitting to Adrian's right.

Celeste Ward offered a polite, meticulously practiced smile. At thirty-two, she was draped in a sculpted satin evening gown that hugged her figure, her fair, rosy skin adorned with brilliant diamond earrings and a massive engagement ring. She maintained an air of carefully constructed social poise.

"Thank you, Thomas," Celeste said, her American accent smooth and dripping with aristocratic charm. "Adrian has been incredibly generous. We wanted to ensure that every single detail reflects the strength and unity of our new partnership. Isn't that right, darling?"

Adrian’s cold, perceptive eyes shifted toward Celeste. He rested his hands on the table, revealing refined artistic tattoos on his hands and fingers. The designs utilized generous negative space, preventing them from looking too dense, alongside a small, tasteful neck tattoo that peeked above his collar.

"Unity is a fragile concept, Celeste," Adrian stated, his tone unreadable. "It is tested not by how we celebrate in the light, but by how we manage our obligations."

"Well, our obligations are perfectly managed tonight," Celeste laughed softly, waving a manicured hand. "Everyone who matters is seated right here in this beautiful, luminous room."

Adrian looked at the single empty chair positioned directly to his left. "Not everyone," he murmured quietly.

"She is resting, Adrian," Celeste replied quickly, her smile tightening at the corners. "The excitement of the evening was simply too much for her. It is for the best."
