Chapter 4

The close-up of Celeste’s face revealed the flawless, rosy perfection of her skin under the clear, warm lighting. She maintained her sculpted posture in her satin evening gown, projecting the image of a deeply caring, considerate future wife. As Adrian turned his full attention to the standoff, Celeste smoothly transitioned her hard glare into a look of indulgent, almost pitying concern.
Looking directly at Adrian, Celeste gave a small, indulgent laugh. It was a calculated sound, designed to make the situation appear trivial and amusing to the surrounding guests.
“She’ll spill something, darling,” Celeste said, her American accent lilting with a sickeningly sweet melody.
The words hung in the air, amplified by the sheer, quiet cruelty behind them.
"I have asked the kitchen to prepare a lovely tray for her in her room," Celeste continued, leaning slightly toward Adrian. Her diamond earrings sparkled fiercely in the light. "We are hosting the heads of five different families tonight, Adrian. It is simply too chaotic for her. We must think of her comfort, and of course, the flawless execution of this dinner."
Her smile suggested deep, maternal concern, but her eyes briefly searched his face for agreement. She was testing her boundaries, asserting her new role as the matriarch of the Sterling empire.
Adrian did not smile back.
His face remained an unreadable mask of masculine authority. The extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble on his sharply defined jawline seemed to harden into stone. His cold, perceptive eyes stared directly into Celeste’s, analyzing the vicious intent hidden behind her polite veneer. He remained perfectly silent.
"Adrian?" Celeste whispered, her smile faltering by a fraction of a millimeter. "Surely you agree it is for the best?"
"I agree," Adrian finally spoke, his deep, quiet voice utilizing measured pauses that made the blood in Celeste's veins run cold, "that flawless execution is important."
Celeste let out a quiet breath of relief, believing she had won the political maneuver. "Exactly. Grace, please escort Helen back to her—"
"I did not say she was leaving," Adrian interrupted, his voice dropping an octave, low and dangerous.
When he did not smile back, the corners of Celeste's mouth tightened significantly. Her carefully maintained social poise cracked, revealing the frustrated, controlling woman beneath the satin and diamonds.

"Adrian, please don't be difficult," Celeste hissed under her breath, maintaining her rigid smile for the sake of the guests watching them. "Look at her. She is shaking like a leaf. She is going to humiliate you in front of the entire eastern syndicate."
Adrian slowly shifted his gaze from his fiancée to his aunt. The silence from the head of the table began to spread outward, a heavy, suffocating wave that slowly began to quiet the conversations of the White American guests seated nearby. The bright, luminous room offered absolutely no dark tones for the cruelty to hide within.
