Chapter 8

The camera angle shifted into a tight close-up of Adrian, with the rigid, furious profile of Celeste facing him in the foreground. The bright, airy colors of the room felt suddenly charged with an explosive, high-voltage tension.

Keeping Helen’s fragile, trembling hand safely secured within his own, Adrian slowly turned his head. The measured, deliberate movement was terrifying in its precision. He shifted his gaze across the white table linens until his eyes locked entirely onto his fiancée.

The profound tenderness that had just softened his angular face vanished in a microsecond. The cold, sharp, intimidating Mafia boss slammed back into place with the force of a steel vault closing.

His dark eyes were devoid of any human warmth. They bored into Celeste, stripping away the sculpted satin evening gown, the diamond earrings, and the meticulously crafted social pedigree, leaving only a cruel, insecure woman completely exposed to the entire eastern syndicate.

“What else should I be ashamed of?” Adrian asked.

His voice was deep and dangerously quiet. It was a question, but it carried the lethal weight of an executioner's final decree.

Celeste’s polite, indulgent smile failed completely. The muscles in her fair, rosy face twitched as the blood drained from her cheeks. She drew a sharp, panicked breath, opening her mouth to formulate an excuse, to weave another web of high-society manipulation.

"Adrian, I was only thinking of the family's image—" Celeste started, her American accent cracking horribly under the immense pressure of his unblinking stare.

"I asked you a question, Celeste," Adrian interrupted, his voice dropping even lower, entirely unforgiving. "If the woman who fed me, clothed me, and kept me alive when my mother was put in the ground is an embarrassment to you... what else about my life makes you ashamed?"

"Nothing!" Celeste stammered, her eyes darting nervously toward the dozens of capos and rival family heads who were watching her public dismantling with rapt, silent attention. "You are twisting my words! I love you! I love this family!"

"You love the power," Adrian corrected her, his tone as cold as a winter grave. "You love the ring on your finger. But you despise the blood that built it."

Celeste opened her mouth again, her chest heaving under the satin gown. She desperately searched her mind for a retort, for a way to salvage her dignity and her position at the table. She drew a long, shaky breath, her eyes wide with a dawning, absolute terror.

But she could not answer.

The silence in the luminous, golden-glow of the dining room stretched into eternity. All guests remained completely turned toward them, watching the undisputed king of the syndicate break his future queen without ever raising his voice. The unanswered question hung in the bright, clear air, a guillotine waiting to drop.
