Chapter 8

The transition from a peaceful, luminous estate to a heavily armed fortress was terrifyingly swift. The bright video colors of the mansion's interior seemed to dim as the heavy, steel blast doors slammed shut over the massive floor-to-ceiling windows, casting the corridors into artificial, secure lighting. Heavily armed White American men in professional dark suits flooded the property, their faces grim and focused.
Inside the mahogany-paneled study, Emma stood near the leather armchair, completely overwhelmed by the sudden explosion of violence she had unwittingly triggered. The sophisticated black maid dress felt entirely out of place in a room that had just become a military command center.
Julian hung up the encrypted phone. He turned to look at her, noticing her trembling hands.
"You are safe here, Emma," Julian assured her, his deep voice incredibly gentle. "The estate is locked down. No one gets in or out without my authorization."
"What is going to happen?" Emma asked, her voice a fragile whisper.
"I am going to handle the threat," Julian replied simply, walking over to a hidden wall panel. He pressed his thumb against a biometric scanner, and the panel slid open to reveal a heavily stocked weapons cache. "You stay in this room. Do not open the door for anyone except me or Thomas."
He reached in and pulled out a sleek, dark sidearm, checking the magazine with practiced, terrifying efficiency. He slipped the weapon into the shoulder holster concealed beneath his tailored vest.
"Mr. Ashford," Emma called out as he turned toward the door.
Julian stopped, looking back at her. The cinematic light caught the loose strands of hair falling over his forehead. He looked less like a Mafia boss and more like a dark, avenging knight.
"Please be careful," Emma whispered, her heart hammering in her chest.
A small, genuine smile touched the corners of Julian’s mouth. It was a rare, unguarded expression that completely transformed his handsome face. "I always am."
He stepped out of the study, the heavy oak doors closing solidly behind him, the deadbolt clicking loudly into place to secure her inside.
Julian walked down the brightly lit corridor toward the isolated guest wing. His polished leather shoes made slow, deliberate sounds against the marble floor. He bypassed the frantic activity of his soldiers preparing for the harbor raid, his mind focused entirely on the traitor currently locked in his home.
He reached the heavy double doors of the guest suite. Two massive bodyguards stood at attention, stepping aside instantly as he approached.
Julian pushed the doors open.
Diana Vale was pacing frantically in the center of the luxurious room. Her elegant satin evening gown was slightly wrinkled, her fair, rosy face pale and streaked with ruined makeup. When she saw Julian step into the room, she froze, genuine, unadulterated terror finally washing over her.
"Julian," Diana gasped, taking a step backward. "Please, whatever she told you, it's a lie. She is just a maid! She is trying to ruin us!"
Julian didn't answer. He slowly closed the heavy doors behind him, the loud click of the lock echoing with apocalyptic finality in the quiet room.

"I know about Elias," Julian stated, his voice a low, vibrating hum of pure menace. "I know about the northern shipments. And I know about the federal setup."
Diana’s mouth dropped open. The color drained entirely from her lips. The desperate, frantic lies she had been preparing evaporated entirely. She was completely exposed, trapped in a room with the most dangerous man in the city.
