Chapter 1

The engagement dinner was a spectacle of absolute perfection. It was bathed in bright, airy, luminous colors with a soft, elegant warmth that seemed to radiate from the very walls of the Ashford mansion. The crystal chandeliers suspended high above cast a gentle, golden glow, creating a clean, clear lighting scenario perfectly balanced with a slightly warm white tone. It was a space designed to display the untouchable wealth and power of the East Coast syndicate. There was no heavy yellow cast, no muddy orange tint, nor any dark shadows to hide within. Sufficient illumination clearly revealed the entire room, highlighting the clean whites of the table linens, the polished highlights of the crystal, and the natural, fair, rosy skin tones of the White American guests.
At the head of the impossibly long table sat Julian Ashford. At forty-two, he was a Mafia boss who commanded the room not with volume, but with an overwhelming, deeply masculine presence. He was as handsome as a classic movie star. His powerful, broad shoulders filled out a tailored dark three-piece suit flawlessly. He possessed an angular face with a high-bridged nose, a sharply defined jawline, and extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble. His thick, slightly wavy hair was naturally swept back, though a few loose strands fell stubbornly over his forehead, creating a romantic look that violently contrasted the cold, perceptive nature of his eyes.
"The merger with the northern families is solidifying faster than anticipated, Julian," a senior capo remarked, his American accent crisp as he cut into his steak.
"We do not celebrate anticipation," Julian replied. His voice was deep, low, and perfectly modulated, utilizing controlled pauses that demanded complete attention. The refined artistic tattoos across his hands and fingers flexed slightly as he reached for his wineglass. The generous negative space in the ink prevented the designs from looking dense, complementing the small neck tattoo visible above his collar. "We celebrate execution."
Sitting directly to his right was Diana Vale, his thirty-three-year-old fiancée. She wore an elegant satin evening gown that draped flawlessly over her fair, rosy skin. Heavy diamond earrings caught the chandelier light, matching the massive engagement ring on her finger.
"Julian is always so focused on business," Diana laughed lightly, placing a manicured hand over his. "Tonight is about us, darling. Our future together."
Julian did not look at her hand. His gaze drifted across the crowded dining hall. The room was filled with the most dangerous men and women in the country, all dressed in formal evening attire, their conversations a polite hum masking the brutal reality of their underworld.
Moving seamlessly through this sea of predators was Emma Lawson. At twenty-eight, the housemaid was breathtakingly beautiful, resembling a movie star herself with her softly tapered face, expressive brows, and hair gathered into a neat, loose low bun. She wore a sophisticated black maid dress with a cinched waist, a slim fitted silhouette, and a short A-line skirt. A neatly tied white apron, paired with a white collar and cuffs, completed the elegant, polished look.
Emma approached the head of the table, carrying a silver tray laden with the final course. Her fair, rosy skin was flawless, save for a secret she desperately needed to keep hidden. Her elderly mother, suffering from severe dementia, was currently residing in a specialized care facility. The exorbitant costs were paid for directly through Emma’s employment at the Ashford estate.
Emma stepped up beside Julian’s heavy oak chair, her posture perfect, her breathing shallow. She reached out to place the delicate porcelain dessert plate before him.
As she leaned forward, the crisp white cuff of her left sleeve caught slightly on the edge of the table and slid back.
It was a fraction of an inch, but under the bright, luminous lighting, it was undeniable. Exposed against her fair skin was an angry, dark purple bruise wrapped around her delicate wrist.
Julian’s cold, perceptive gaze instantly dropped from his wineglass. His eyes settled on the dark mark with terrifying, immediate focus.

Emma noticed the movement of his eyes. Pure, unadulterated panic flashed across her softly tapered face. She hastily pulled her arm back, her fingers fumbling clumsily with the fabric as she desperately tugged the white cuff down to conceal the injury.
Across the table, Diana Vale watched the entire micro-interaction. Her eyes narrowed imperceptibly, a cold, calculating spark igniting in her gaze.
