Chapter 4

The close-up of Emma captured the devastating heartbreak of a woman trapped by her own love. Her fair, rosy complexion was pale with absolute terror. The bright, clear lighting illuminated the tears falling onto the pristine white collar of her sophisticated black maid dress.
The moment the words left her mouth, Emma realized she had made a fatal error.
Her shoulders instantly drew inward in a defensive, panicked posture. She had broken the cardinal rule of her employment; she had brought her personal vulnerabilities into the dangerous political arena of the Ashford syndicate. More terrifyingly, she had indirectly exposed Diana’s blackmail in front of the most powerful man in the city.
Julian’s posture remained completely still. He did not lower his offered hand. The generous negative space of his hand tattoos was clearly visible in the warm light. He simply stared at her, the pieces of the puzzle snapping together with violent, devastating clarity. The bruise. The sudden mention of her mother. The fiancée's eager explanation.
Before Julian could speak, Diana desperately attempted to regain control of the narrative.
The close-up shifted to Diana. The thirty-three-year-old woman met Julian’s cold, perceptive eyes, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs. She forced a small, reassuring smile onto her lips, projecting the image of a deeply caring, misunderstood benefactor.
“I only mentioned her care,” Diana said.
Her American accent was carefully gentle, attempting to sound wounded and confused. But the panic was bleeding through the cracks. She spoke too quickly, her words rushing out in a frantic stream of self-preservation.
"I was simply checking on the facility's invoices earlier this week, darling," Diana continued, her diamond earrings shaking as she leaned forward. "Emma is under so much stress. I think she is simply confused. It's a highly emotional topic."
Julian didn't blink. He didn't acknowledge her explanation.
With agonizing, terrifying slowness, Julian turned his head toward his fiancée. The movement was entirely controlled, the motion of an apex predator locking onto its target. His eyes were already fixed on hers before his face fully turned.
The moment Diana met his unwavering, absolute gaze, her forced smile began to fail. The corners of her mouth twitched downward. The air around the head of the table grew incredibly cold, completely neutralizing the soft elegant warmth of the room's lighting.
The close-up of Julian revealed the horrifying, dark transformation beneath his handsome, movie-star exterior. The extremely short stubble on his jawline clenched tight.
He didn't yell. He didn't need to. He simply stepped slightly in front of Emma, using his broad, powerful shoulders to physically block the housemaid from Diana's view, creating an impenetrable wall of tailored dark wool.
Keeping Diana in his unwavering gaze, Julian’s voice dropped into a register of pure, concentrated ice.

“In whose name?” Julian asked.
Each word was measured, precise, and loaded with apocalyptic danger.
