Chapter 5

The question hung in the bright, luminous air, an executioner's blade suspended by a single thread. The crystal chandeliers seemed to mock the dark, suffocating reality of the confrontation. The hundreds of White American guests remained absolutely paralyzed, their wine glasses forgotten, terrified to even draw breath.
Diana’s lips parted. The fair, rosy skin of her face drained entirely of color, leaving her looking sickly and translucent. She looked up at the man she had planned to marry, and she was struck with sudden, unadulterated fear.
“In whose name?”
The implication was absolute. Julian controlled the accounts. Julian funded the estate. Julian authorized the charity. To threaten the removal of Emma’s mother from the residential care facility meant that Diana had wielded power she did not possess. She had used his authority, his name, and his wealth as a weapon to terrorize a member of his household. In the Mafia, leveraging the Boss's name without his explicit consent was an act of high treason.
Diana was entirely unable to answer without admitting her guilt. She stared at him, her chest heaving under the sculpted satin evening gown, desperately searching for a lie that wouldn't immediately seal her fate.
Behind Julian’s broad shoulder, Emma waited. The beautiful twenty-eight-year-old housemaid clutched her white apron, her tearful, uncertain eyes watching the broad back of the man who had just risked his entire political alliance to shield her.
"Julian, please," Diana finally stammered, her voice a fragile, pathetic whisper that barely carried past the table. "It was a misunderstanding. I was just trying to maintain order in the household. You have bigger things to worry about than a maid's mother."
"I worry about everything that happens under my roof," Julian replied, his voice remaining terrifyingly low. "A bruise on my staff. An unauthorized threat made using my capital. You believed you could operate in the shadows of my house."
He took a slow, deliberate step closer to Diana, forcing the thirty-three-year-old woman to physically press herself back against her heavy oak chair.
"You believed," Julian continued, the controlled pauses highlighting his absolute, lethal resolve, "that the ring on your finger gave you the right to be cruel."
"I am going to be your wife!" Diana shrieked, panic finally breaking through her aristocratic facade. She looked wildly around the room at the silent capos and associates. "You cannot humiliate me like this! The northern families will not stand for it! My father will pull out of the merger!"
"Let him," Julian stated coldly.
The absolute finality of his words sent a shockwave through the room. He was publicly terminating a multi-million-dollar alliance over the mistreatment of a housemaid.
"Thomas," Julian called out without turning his head.
The senior lieutenant stepped forward instantly from the side of the room. "Yes, Boss."
"Escort Diana to the guest wing," Julian commanded, his American accent sharp and unyielding. "She is no longer permitted in the primary residence. Have her belongings packed. She leaves the estate at first light."
May you like
"No! Julian, you can't do this!" Diana screamed, thrashing wildly as Thomas and another bodyguard approached. Her elegant satin gown twisted awkwardly as she was hauled roughly from her chair.
Julian didn't look at her as she was dragged screaming toward the heavy doors. The engagement was over, but the true reckoning had only just begun.
