Chapter 10

The heavy oak doors of the private study clicked open, breaking the tense silence of the room. Emma jumped slightly in the leather armchair, her heart hammering until she saw Julian step through the doorway.
The cinematic, golden warmth of the room illuminated his handsome, angular face. The cold, terrifying edge of the Mafia boss had completely vanished. He looked exhausted, but the dangerous storm in his eyes had subsided.
"Is it over?" Emma asked, her voice a fragile whisper.
"It's over," Julian confirmed, walking slowly into the room and closing the doors behind him. He removed his suit jacket, tossing it casually over the back of a sofa, the action making the space feel instantly more intimate. "The harbor is secure. The Vale family alliance is permanently terminated. Diana is gone."
Emma let out a long, shuddering breath, the remaining tension finally bleeding from her shoulders. "I can't believe this is happening. I was just pouring water an hour ago."
Julian offered a soft, genuine smile. He walked over to a small side table, picking up a crystal tumbler and pouring a small amount of amber liquid. He didn't drink it; he simply held the glass, watching her.
"You showed incredible bravery tonight, Emma," Julian murmured, his deep voice incredibly tender. "You were terrified, and yet you refused to let me marry a traitor. You protected this family."
"I was protecting my mother," Emma corrected him softly, looking down at her white apron. "I would do anything to keep her safe."
"I know," Julian said, taking a slow step toward her. "That kind of loyalty is extremely rare. It is the only thing in this world I truly value."
He stopped just a few feet away from her chair. The bright, clean lighting caught the loose strands of hair falling over his forehead, giving him that charming, romantic look that completely belied his violent profession.
"Your employment as a housemaid is officially terminated," Julian stated quietly.
Emma’s head snapped up, panic flashing across her softly tapered face. "Mr. Ashford, please. I need this job. You said my mother’s care was funded, but I still need to work. I have nowhere else to go."
"You are not leaving," Julian reassured her instantly, his voice dropping into a low, comforting rumble. He reached out, offering his hand, exactly as he had done in the dining hall. "But you will no longer serve this house. You will manage it."
Emma looked at his hand, the generous negative space of his tattoos clearly visible. The hesitation that had paralyzed her hours ago was entirely gone.
She reached out, her fair, rosy fingers slowly settling into his large, warm palm.
Julian gently closed his fingers around hers, a firm, secure grip that promised absolute protection. He pulled her gently to her feet.
"I have transferred the management of my personal, legitimate estates into a new holding company," Julian explained, looking directly into her expressive eyes. "I need someone I can trust implicitly to oversee those assets. Someone who understands loyalty. The salary is substantial. You will have your own suite in the east wing, and you will have full, unrestricted access to visit your mother whenever you wish."
Emma stared at him, tears welling in her eyes once more, but this time, they were tears of profound, overwhelming joy. The gilded cage had been shattered, replaced by a fortress that offered genuine safety and respect.
"I don't know what to say," Emma whispered, her voice breaking softly.
May you like
"You don't need to say anything," Julian murmured, his thumb gently brushing the back of her uninjured hand. "Just know that as long as you are beside me, no one will ever hurt you again."
Emma smiled, a radiant, beautiful expression that lit up the golden warmth of the study. The war outside the gates was over, and a new, unbreakable alliance had been forged in the bright, cinematic light of the Ashford estate.
