Chapter 2

The bright, airy lighting of the dining hall seemed to sharpen, acting as a high-definition spotlight on the silent tension escalating at the head of the table. Julian did not move. He did not ask a question immediately. The Mafia boss possessed a preternatural ability to read a room, and the sudden, frantic terror in his housemaid's eyes was a glaring anomaly.
Emma stepped back quickly, her heart hammering violently against her ribs. She kept her hands clasped tightly in front of her crisp white apron, ensuring both cuffs were pulled down as far as the sophisticated black dress allowed.
"Will there be anything else, sir?" Emma asked, her American accent trembling slightly despite her best efforts to remain professional.
Before Julian could answer, the tension was pierced by a light, airy sound.
Looking directly at Julian, Diana gave a light, dismissive laugh. It was a carefully orchestrated sound, designed to sound entirely casual to the surrounding guests while delivering a precise, psychological strike.
“She bruises so easily,” Diana said, her voice carrying a sickeningly sweet melody.
The words hung in the warm, golden glow of the crystal chandeliers.
Diana leaned slightly closer to Julian. Her lips formed a sympathetic, understanding smile, painting a picture of an empathetic future matriarch. But her eyes remained utterly watchful, assessing his reaction with clinical precision. She knew exactly how that bruise had gotten there. She had inflicted it herself three days ago in the west wing corridor when Emma had accidentally walked in on a private, highly sensitive conversation Diana was having on her cell phone. The physical assault was accompanied by a terrifying threat: if Emma ever breathed a word to Julian, Diana would personally ensure the funding for the mother's residential care was completely severed, leaving the elderly woman out on the street.
Diana waited for Julian’s response. She expected him to nod, to accept the trivial explanation and return his focus to the high-stakes politics of their engagement dinner.
Julian did not respond.
He didn't nod. He didn't blink. The extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble defining his jawline seemed to harden into absolute stone. His cold, perceptive eyes stared directly into Diana’s, silently dissecting the lie.
When Julian did not smile back, the corners of Diana’s mouth tightened significantly. Her carefully maintained social poise cracked for a fraction of a millimeter. The silence stretching from the head of the table was becoming a physical weight.

Only after finishing her statement and realizing Julian wasn't going to validate it did Diana finally glance toward Emma. Her look was a silent, lethal warning, reminding the housemaid of the elderly woman whose life hung in the balance.
Emma squeezed her eyes shut for a second, her fair, rosy face turning pale as she felt the crushing weight of the ultimatum. She was trapped in a gilded cage, surrounded by bright, luminous colors, completely isolated in her terror.
