Chapter 6

The bright, natural lighting of the foyer felt suddenly cold and sterile, like the harsh glare of an interrogation room. Luciano stood perfectly still, holding the smartphone in his heavily tattooed hand. The silence was absolute; no ambient music played, leaving only the sound of Celeste’s quiet, pained weeping from the bottom of the stairs.
Luciano looked from the deliberately positioned phone screen down to the crumpled, unconscious body of Dario lying among the ruined wooden presentation models. He then slowly, deliberately shifted his cold, intimidating eyes to his father.
Augusto was rubbing his chest where Luciano had pinned him, his fair, rosy skin pale and sweating. The older man tried to maintain his authoritative posture, but his eyes darted nervously toward the armed capos standing around the perimeter of the room.
Luciano’s mind connected the final, horrifying pieces of the puzzle. Dario was hot-headed and arrogant, but he wasn't a tactician. He wouldn't have thought to set up a camera. Augusto, however, was a master manipulator who had ruled the Commission through blackmail and optics for thirty years.
"You knew," Luciano whispered. His voice was dead calm. He spoke incredibly slowly, the controlled pauses emphasizing the apocalyptic level of betrayal he had just uncovered. "You knew he was going to push her."
"Luciano, do not be absurd," Augusto stammered, his American accent cracking. "I came out of the council room just as the altercation began. I had no idea the camera was there. Nora must have left it."
"It was hidden behind the flowers," Nora interjected bravely, her voice shaking but clear. "I didn't put it there, Luciano. I swear."
"I know you didn't, Nora," Luciano said softly, without looking at her. His gaze remained locked on his father like a laser.
Luciano took a slow, measured step toward Augusto. The artistic tattoos on his neck shifted as his sharply defined jawline locked into stone. The few loose strands of wavy hair falling over his forehead gave him the look of a dark, romantic avenger preparing to execute a traitor.
"You didn't set up that phone. To record her falling," Luciano said, his volume dropping into a lethal, freezing whisper that carried across the dead silence of the room. "You set it up. For me. Didn't you?"
Augusto’s face became genuinely, profoundly frightened. The arrogant facade of the former patriarch shattered completely under his son’s piercing gaze.
"You needed me. On camera," Luciano continued, stepping closer until he was inches from his father's face. "Assaulting my own brother. Without provocation. To show the Commission. That I am unstable. That I am a danger to the family."
"You are unstable!" Augusto suddenly shouted, panic overriding his logic. "You are turning this syndicate into a legitimate corporation! You are cutting off the old revenue streams! The other families are laughing at us, Luciano! I had to show the Commission that you lacked the temperament to lead! I had to prove you were out of control so they would vote to reinstate me!"
"And you used my pregnant wife. As bait," Luciano stated, the words dropping from his lips like poison.
Dario groaned loudly from the floor, his eyes fluttering open as he regained a fraction of consciousness. He spat a mouthful of blood onto the marble, staring up at his brother in terrified confusion. He stopped smiling. The realization that their flawless coup had just been completely exposed washed over his bruised face.
"You pushed my wife. To trigger my rage," Luciano summarized, looking down at his bleeding brother. "You risked the life of my unborn child. For a political maneuver."
The capos in the room, men who had served Augusto for decades, slowly stepped away from the old man. The sacred rule of the Mafia—that women and children were strictly off-limits—had been violently broken by the former boss.

Luciano slipped the smartphone into the inner pocket of his tailored dark suit. He turned his back on his father and walked back to Celeste.
"Get the doctor," Luciano commanded, his voice echoing with absolute, unquestionable authority. "Now."
