Chapter 1

The mansion foyer was awash in bright, vivid colors, illuminated by natural, cinematic lighting that poured through the massive skylights. There was no dull yellow tint to spoil the crispness of the afternoon; the light was perfectly white, highlighting the opulent details of the Ferraro estate. At the center of the grand entrance was a wide, lavishly carpeted staircase sweeping down toward a polished marble console. A massive, vibrant floral arrangement sat perfectly arranged on the stone surface, surrounded by framed family photographs and lightweight wooden presentation models celebrating the day’s event. The private graduation reception was in full swing. Dozens of capos, family members, and heavily armed bodyguards—all white American adults with sharp American accents and fair, rosy skin—mingled in the adjoining rooms.
At the very top of the grand staircase landing stood Celeste Ferraro. At twenty-four years old, she was breathtakingly elegant, her fair, rosy complexion glowing with the unmistakable radiance of a woman seven months pregnant. She wore a flowing, pale-blue maternity reception dress that draped beautifully over her swollen belly. Diamond earrings caught the bright light, matching the heavy wedding ring on her finger. She stood quietly, needing a moment of rest away from the crowded reception below, her comfortable flats sinking slightly into the thick carpet.
Without warning, the heavy silence of the upper landing was broken by the sharp, deliberate sound of polished leather shoes stepping up behind her. It was Dario Ferraro, twenty-nine years old, wearing an expensive, perfectly fitted dress shirt and tailored trousers. His fair skin was flushed with a toxic mixture of jealousy and simmering rage.
"You really think you own this house now, don't you, Celeste?" Dario asked, his American accent dripping with condescension. His luxury wristwatch caught the light as he crossed his arms.
Celeste turned slightly, her hand instinctively resting on her pregnant belly. "Dario, please. I am just catching my breath. Your brother is in a council meeting, and I didn't want to interrupt him."
"My brother," Dario scoffed, taking a slow, menacing step closer to her. "Luciano acts like he is the absolute king of this family just because the old man handed him the reigns. And you? You walk around here like you are untouchable just because you are carrying his spawn."
"I don't want any trouble, Dario," Celeste said, her voice trembling slightly as she noticed the dangerous glint in his eyes. "Let me just go back downstairs to the guests."
"No, you listen to me," Dario hissed, stepping directly into her personal space. "You and that baby are nothing but a temporary distraction. The Ferraro organization belongs to the strongest, not the one who decides to play house."
"Move out of my way, Dario," Celeste demanded, her fair skin paling as genuine fear began to set in.
"Or what?" Dario laughed coldly. "Are you going to run to Luciano? Tell him I was mean to you?"
Before Celeste could take another step away from the steep precipice of the staircase, Dario’s expression darkened into something entirely sociopathic. He stepped directly behind her, his polished leather shoes planting firmly on the top landing. With a sudden, explosive burst of violence, he raised both of his hands and violently drove his palms directly into her upper back.

"That baby doesn’t make you important," Dario laughed, the sound sharp and cruel.
Celeste gasped, a horrific sound of absolute terror escaping her lips. The sheer force of the shove sent her stumbling forward. She lost her footing in her flats, her arms flailing desperately to catch the banister. She missed. She hit the first stair hard with her shoulder, the impact jarring her entire frame, and then she tumbled violently sideways, rolling down several carpeted steps. Unnoticed by either of them, tucked discreetly beside the large floral arrangement on the marble console below, a smartphone remained propped up, its camera lens pointing directly at the staircase, continuously recording the entire horrific scene.
