Chapter 3

The sound of slow, arrogant footsteps echoed from the top of the landing. Dario Ferraro began his descent down the wide carpeted stairs, a sickening, unapologetic smirk plastered across his fair, rosy face. He adjusted the cuffs of his expensive fitted shirt, seemingly entirely unbothered by the pregnant woman weeping in agony at the bottom of the steps.
From the open doors of the council room, Augusto Ferraro stepped into the bright, natural light of the foyer. At sixty-five, Luciano and Dario’s father was the former Mafia patriarch, a man who still wielded immense influence. He wore a sharp formal blazer, a heavy family ring, and polished leather shoes. He stopped near the marble console, his cold eyes taking in the scene. He did not rush forward to help his daughter-in-law. He simply stood there, watching the unfolding violence with a disturbing, silent neutrality.
Luciano gently pulled his sleeve free from Celeste’s desperate grip.
"Do not move. Stay exactly where you are," Luciano whispered to his wife, the controlled pauses in his speech emphasizing the absolute seriousness of his command.
Luciano slowly rose to his full height. He positioned his tall, deeply masculine frame directly between Celeste and the descending staircase. He was a living, breathing wall of tailored wool and lethal intent.
Dario reached the bottom step and stopped, standing mere inches away from his older brother. The height difference was negligible, but the sheer, intimidating aura of the Mafia Boss made Luciano appear ten feet tall.
"She tripped, brother," Dario lied smoothly, his American accent laced with a mocking, challenging tone. "Those maternity shoes must be slippery. You should really take better care of your fragile little wife."
"She said. You pushed her," Luciano stated. He kept his volume incredibly low. Every sentence sounded measured, cold, and immensely dangerous. He did not raise his hands. He simply stared into his brother’s eyes.
"She’s hysterical," Dario laughed, stepping aggressively into Luciano’s personal space.
Without warning, Dario suddenly shoved Luciano squarely in the chest with both hands.
Luciano barely moved, his solid, muscular frame absorbing the impact effortlessly. He did not retaliate. He simply stood there, his sharp, intimidating eyes unblinking.
Encouraged by his brother's lack of immediate response, Dario pulled his right arm back and threw a heavy, violent punch directly across Luciano’s cheek. The sound of knuckles hitting bone cracked through the eerily silent foyer.
Augusto watched from the marble console, his hands clasped behind his back, making no move to intervene or stop his younger son's assault.
Luciano’s head snapped slightly to the side from the force of the blow. A faint red mark appeared on his fair, rosy skin, right above his neatly trimmed stubble.
"Go ahead," Dario smirked, dropping his hands to his sides, his chest heaving with adrenaline. He looked around the foyer, gesturing toward the bodyguards and capos who were beginning to spill out of the adjoining rooms to witness the commotion. "Hit me back in front of everybody. Show the whole family how the great Boss loses his temper over a clumsy woman."

Luciano did not speak. He slowly, deliberately turned his face back toward his younger brother. The few loose strands of wavy hair shifted over his forehead. His eyes were entirely devoid of human empathy. He was calculating the exact amount of force required to dismantle the man standing in front of him.
"You put your hands. On my wife," Luciano whispered, the absolute dead calm in his voice causing the surrounding bodyguards to instinctively take a step backward.
