Chapter 5

Nora Bellini, seventeen years old and dressed in an elegant, bright graduation-party dress, had been standing near the edge of the foyer when the violence erupted. Her fair, rosy face was pale with shock, her comfortable flats rooted to the marble floor. But her sharp eyes had caught something the grown men in the room had missed entirely.
Sitting propped up against a crystal vase beside the large floral arrangement on the marble console was a smartphone. Its screen was dark, but the small, unmistakable red light of the camera application was blinking steadily. It was actively recording.
Realizing what was happening, Nora suddenly lunged forward. She grabbed the still-recording phone from its hiding place beside the floral arrangement.
"Give me that!" Augusto roared, his formal blazer shifting as the sixty-five-year-old former patriarch suddenly lunged toward the teenage girl with terrifying aggression.
Augusto’s sudden, desperate movement completely betrayed his neutral facade. He reached out with his heavy, ringed hands, intending to violently snatch the device from his graduating niece.
Luciano intercepted him with blinding speed.
Abandoning his position beside Celeste, Luciano crossed the marble floor in two massive strides. As Augusto’s hand reached for the girl, Luciano forcefully knocked his father’s arm away with a brutal, sweeping block. Without hesitation, Luciano grabbed his father by the lapels of his formal blazer and violently forced the older man back against the edge of the marble console.
The heavy stone shifted slightly under the impact. Augusto gasped, his eyes widening in pure shock as his own son pinned him to the furniture.
No dialogue was spoken between the two men. Luciano’s cold, sharp eyes bored into his father’s face, a silent, terrifying warning that the old rules of respect had just been suspended. Luciano kept his father pinned with one heavily tattooed hand, turning his head to look at his young cousin.
"Nora," Luciano commanded, his volume incredibly low, yet the measured cadence sliced through the tension of the room. "Show me."
Nora’s hands were shaking violently, but she stood her ground. She tapped the screen of the smartphone, stopping the active recording, and immediately pulled up the video file. She turned the bright, high-definition screen toward Luciano.
The video began playing silently. The bright cinematic colors of the footage were perfectly clear, with no yellow tint.
Luciano watched the screen. The recording had clearly begun several minutes before Celeste had even reached the top of the staircase. It showed the empty foyer, perfectly framed to capture both the top landing and the bottom marble floor. It was a deliberate, meticulously planned camera angle.
Then, the footage showed Celeste walking into the frame at the top of the stairs. It showed Dario stepping up behind her. It showed the violent, two-handed shove. It showed her terrifying tumble down the carpeted steps. And it showed Luciano rushing out, Dario's unprovoked punches, and Luciano's devastating counter-strike.
The entire sequence had been captured in perfect, undeniable high definition.

No dialogue broke the heavy, oppressive silence of the foyer as the video played to its conclusion. The white American bodyguards and capos strained their necks, realizing that the device held explosive evidence.
Luciano slowly released his father’s blazer. He took the smartphone from Nora’s trembling hands. His thumb hovered over the screen, his highly analytical, Mafia Boss mind processing the terrifying implications of the deliberate camera placement.
