Chapter 1

The crystal chandeliers suspended from the vaulted ceiling cast a bright, luminous warmth over the crowded dining room, eliminating any shadow that dared to linger in the corners of the estate. The lighting was natural and cinematic, a clean, elegant glow that highlighted the fair, rosy skin of the fifty guests gathered around the long banquet table. Gilded wall panels reflected the warm light, while carved walnut furniture and velvet dining chairs grounded the room in an undeniable, old-world luxury. At the far end of the hall, a tall Christmas tree sparkled brilliantly with warm fairy lights, gold ornaments, and thick burgundy ribbons. Ivory candles glowed softly in heavy silver candelabras, their light dancing across the evergreen branches and red berries that served as the centerpiece for the city’s most dangerous syndicate.
Tristan Vale sat at the head of the table, an imposing figure of masculine authority. At thirty-two, the mafia boss possessed an angular face, broad shoulders, and dark, swept-back hair. A faint shadow of very short stubble lined his jaw, adding a rugged edge to his tailored dark three-piece suit. The warm light caught the heavy gold of his family signet ring and the polished crystal of his luxury wristwatch. Refined, artistic tattoos with intricate negative space decorated the backs of his hands and fingers, and a small, delicate design peeked just above his crisp white collar.
"The shipments from the northern ports have been secured, Tristan," an older capo murmured, leaning in close so as not to disturb the festive atmosphere. "We anticipate no further interference from the border factions."
"Are you absolutely certain the routes are clear?" Tristan asked slowly, his deep, controlled voice effortlessly cutting through the ambient noise of the dinner party.
"Completely certain, Boss. The families understand the cost of crossing you."
To Tristan’s left sat Veronica Shaw, his twenty-nine-year-old fiancée. She wore a luxurious emerald evening gown that hugged her curves, paired with dazzling diamond earrings that caught the chandelier’s light with every movement. She maintained a polished, unwavering public smile, playing the perfect hostess to a room full of killers and thieves.
"It is a beautiful evening, gentlemen," Veronica chimed in, her American accent smooth and practiced. "Let us leave the talk of ports and shipments for the morning. Tonight is about family and celebration."
"Speaking of family," Tristan said, turning his cold, unwavering gaze toward Veronica. "Where is Maisie? She should have come down for dinner by now."
"Oh, you know how five-year-olds are, darling," Veronica replied smoothly, reaching out to rest her manicured hand over his tattooed one. "She was feeling overwhelmed by the crowd. I told her she could stay playing upstairs in her playroom until dessert. The nanny is with her."
Tristan’s jaw tightened slightly, though he did not pull his hand away. "She was wearing her burgundy dress. She was excited for the tree."

"She will see the tree later, Tristan," Veronica assured him, her smile never faltering. "Let the adults enjoy the first course."
From the periphery of the room, Audrey Lane watched the exchange. The twenty-five-year-old maid moved with graceful, delicate precision. She was exceptionally beautiful, her expressive eyes scanning the table to ensure the guests wanted for nothing. She wore an elegant, fitted black maid dress with a cinched waist and a short A-line skirt. A crisp white apron, white collar and cuffs, and a ruffled white maid headband completed her uniform. Audrey knew something was wrong. She had seen the nanny downstairs in the kitchens over twenty minutes ago, drinking coffee alone. Maisie was not upstairs.
