Chapter 1

The opulent dining hall was flooded entirely with a warm, golden light that radiated from enormous tiered crystal chandeliers. It was Christmas Eve, and the sprawling mansion thrummed with the dangerous energy of fifty gathered syndicate capos, wealthy donors, and their elite families. Dozens of tall ivory candles flickered in heavy gilded candelabras, casting shimmering reflections across the polished walnut furniture and cream marble columns. Beside the long banquet table, a towering Christmas tree glowed with warm fairy lights, intricate gold ornaments, and thick cascading burgundy ribbons.

At the head of the table sat Damien Ashford, a thirty-three-year-old mafia boss who commanded the room with effortless, masculine authority. He possessed broad shoulders beneath his tailored dark three-piece suit, an angular face, and naturally swept-back dark hair shadowed by very short, neat stubble. Refined artistic tattoos, intricately designed with negative space, decorated the backs of his hands and fingers. A small, elegant tattoo peeked just above his crisp white collar. His fair, rosy skin caught the golden light as he slowly turned a heavy signet ring on his finger.

"The northern shipping routes remain entirely secured, Damien," murmured Marcus, a senior capo seated to his right, keeping his American accent low.

"Are you absolutely certain the routes are clear of interference, Marcus?" Damien asked. His deep, controlled voice cut through the ambient noise of the room with absolute, terrifying clarity.

"Completely certain, Boss. The rival families understand the cost of crossing you."

To Damien’s left sat Rosalind Shaw, his twenty-nine-year-old fiancée. She was draped in a luxurious emerald satin evening gown that clung perfectly to her figure. Heavy diamond earrings flashed with every tilt of her head. She maintained a polished, elegant public smile, projecting the flawless image of an untouchable mafia queen.

"Let us leave the talk of shipping routes and borders for the morning, gentlemen," Rosalind chimed in, her voice smooth and practiced. "Tonight is Christmas Eve. We are here to celebrate our families uniting. Let us enjoy the peace we have built."

"A beautiful sentiment, Rosalind," agreed a wealthy donor from across the table, raising his crystal glass. "To the future of the Ashford and Shaw families."

Damien did not raise his glass immediately. He looked at the woman sitting beside him, his expression restrained. He was a man who survived by noticing the smallest disruption in his environment. While the surface of the dinner party was immaculate, a heavy, suffocating tension seemed to linger in the air.

"Where is Jamie?" Damien asked, his voice a low rumble.

"He is playing quietly, darling," Rosalind replied smoothly. "The noise overwhelms him."
