Chapter 4

Veronica Shaw shifted smoothly in her velvet dining chair, her luxurious emerald evening gown rustling softly in the dead-silent room. She recognized the catastrophic danger of the moment. The polished facade she had maintained all evening was suddenly under severe threat, and she needed to control the narrative before the mafia boss dismantled it completely.
The cinematic, warm lighting caught the flawless perfection of her makeup, but it could not hide the micro-expressions of panic flitting across her face. Her eyes briefly, nervously flicked toward the brass bolt on the wooden gift chest, checking to ensure it was still securely fastened, before snapping back to Tristan.
A small, charming smile appeared on her lips, but it arrived a fraction of a second too late. The delay was microscopic, but to a man like Tristan Vale, it was as loud as a gunshot.
"A Christmas surprise, darling," Veronica said, her voice light, melodic, and entirely steady.
She reached out, attempting to place her hand over his forearm, aiming to soothe the sudden, lethal tension radiating from his muscular frame.
"A surprise?" Tristan asked, his deep voice dropping an octave. He did not look at her hand. He kept his cold gaze fixed on her face.
"Yes, of course," Veronica lied smoothly, her diamond earrings flashing as she tilted her head playfully. "I had the staff prepare a special presentation for the dessert course. It's a mechanical display. Winding gears and such. The maid must have simply heard the clockwork settling. Isn't that right, Audrey?"
Veronica turned her gaze toward the housemaid. The polished smile remained, but her eyes held a sharp, venomous warning. It was a silent, terrifying command, promising severe, brutal retribution if the twenty-five-year-old maid dared to contradict the fiancée of the syndicate boss.
Audrey felt the weight of that threat press down on her chest like a physical blow. She knew that crossing Veronica Shaw meant losing her job, or worse. The Shaw family was ruthless, and Veronica was known for her vindictive cruelty toward the staff.
"The clockwork..." Audrey whispered, her hands gripping the white fabric of her apron.
"Exactly," Veronica said, turning back to the guests with a bright laugh. "It is meant to be a grand reveal later! Please, everyone, return to your meals. We wouldn't want to ruin the magic of Christmas Eve with premature curiosity."
A few of the guests, eager to dissipate the terrifying tension of the mafia boss, offered hesitant, nervous chuckles and reached for their wine glasses.
Tristan did not laugh. He did not move. He stared at Veronica, his angular face devoid of any emotion. He was a man who traded in lies and deceit on a daily basis; he knew the shape and sound of a falsehood intimately.
"A mechanical display," Tristan repeated slowly, the words rolling off his tongue with a dangerous, calculating weight.
Thump. Thump.

The two small knocks echoed from the wooden chest again. They were incredibly weak this time, the sound of tiny fists exhausting themselves against thick, heavy wood.
Audrey’s breath hitched. She looked at the chest, imagining the terrifying darkness inside. The threat of Veronica’s wrath vanished, entirely eclipsed by her gentle, fierce compassion. She could not leave whatever was in that box to suffer.
