Chapter 6

The bright, luminous colors of the Christmas tree lights reflected in Tristan’s dark eyes as he reached down into the chest. His large hands, decorated with artistic tattoos and negative space, were incredibly gentle as they slipped beneath his daughter's arms.

"I've got you, sweetheart. You're safe," Tristan murmured, his deep voice softening into a tone of profound, aching tenderness that the mafia syndicate had never heard before.

He lifted Maisie effortlessly from the confines of the dark box. The five-year-old girl clung to him immediately, wrapping her small arms desperately around his neck and burying her tear-streaked face into the collar of his tailored suit. She was shivering, the burgundy fabric of her dress wrinkled and dusty from the interior of the chest.

Audrey remained on her knees beside them, her hands hovering anxiously, wanting to comfort the child but knowing her place. Her expressive eyes filled with sympathetic tears as she watched the powerful mafia boss cradle his trembling daughter.

Tristan held Maisie securely against his chest, standing up slowly. He pressed a kiss to the side of her head, his large hand rubbing her back to soothe her ragged breathing.

The fifty guests in the ballroom were absolutely silent. The horror of the situation had paralyzed them. Locking the boss's child in a box was not a prank; it was a psychological torture that bordered on attempted murder in a house with limited oxygen.

Maisie slowly lifted her head from her father's shoulder. She sniffled, wiping her nose with the back of her small hand. Her cream stockings were scuffed, and her eyes were red and swollen.

She turned her head, looking past her father's broad shoulders. She looked directly at Veronica, who was still sitting frozen at the head of the banquet table in her luxurious emerald gown.

Maisie’s voice was small, fragile, and utterly puzzled. It lacked malice, carrying only the innocent, heartbreaking confusion of a child trying to understand a cruelty she didn't deserve.

"You said nobody wanted me," Maisie whispered, her words echoing clearly in the dead-silent ballroom.

The words hit the room with the devastating force of a physical blow.

"You said if I didn't hide in the box, Daddy would be mad that I ruined his dinner," Maisie continued, her lower lip trembling as she looked at the socialite. "You locked it so I couldn't get out."

A collective gasp ripped through the crowd. Capos exchanged dark, dangerous glances. The fiancé of the boss had just been exposed as a monster who psychologically tormented and physically endangered the sole heir to the syndicate.

Veronica’s face drained of all color. The fair, rosy skin turned a sickly, translucent white. She opened her mouth to speak, to scream a denial, to call the five-year-old a liar, but the sheer, overwhelming terror paralyzing her vocal cords made it impossible.

Tristan stopped rubbing his daughter's back. His entire body went rigid, the muscles in his arms locking like steel bands around the child.
