Chapter 7

Tristan held Maisie securely against his chest, absorbing the tremors of his terrified daughter. He briefly looked down at her, the harsh, angular lines of his face softening with a quiet, profound tenderness. It was a fleeting moment of pure fatherly devotion, completely visible in the cinematic, warm light of the chandeliers.
But as the heartbreaking innocence of her words settled into his mind, the tenderness vanished.
Tristan slowly raised his head. He turned his gaze away from his child and looked directly at Veronica.
The transition was terrifying. The loving father was instantly replaced by the ruthless, cold-blooded mafia boss who controlled the city. His dark eyes became absolute, unwavering voids of lethal intent. A slight, deliberate tightening of his jaw was the only movement on his face, but it spoke volumes. The extremely short stubble on his chin seemed to bristle with suppressed, explosive violence.
He held her gaze. He did not yell. He did not curse. He simply stared at her with a cold, unwavering fury that promised absolute, undeniable destruction.
Veronica stared back, her chest heaving beneath her emerald gown. The silence in the room was deafening. No one dared to move. No one dared to speak.
"Tristan, darling, please," Veronica finally gasped, her American accent pitching high and breathless with panic. "She is confused! It was a game! Hide and seek! I didn't lock the bolt, it must have slipped! I swear to you, I wouldn't hurt her!"
Tristan did not blink. The measured, slow cadence of his voice was completely devoid of emotion when he finally spoke.
"Does a game of hide and seek require you to tell a five-year-old child that she is unwanted by her own father?" Tristan asked.
"I never said that!" Veronica shrieked, tears of sheer desperation welling in her eyes. She pointed a shaking, diamond-adorned finger at Maisie. "She is lying! She has always hated me! She is trying to ruin our wedding!"
"Would my daughter fabricate a nightmare to destroy a dinner party?" Tristan inquired, his perceptive eyes narrowing into cold slits.
"The maid put her up to it!" Veronica cried, pivoting her frantic accusation toward Audrey, who was still kneeling by the open chest. "She hates me! She planted the girl in the box to frame me! You cannot believe a servant and a child over your future wife!"
Audrey held her ground, her elegant posture unwavering despite the terror hammering in her chest. She slowly stood up, smoothing her white apron, and looked directly at the mafia boss.
"I poured the water, Mr. Vale," Audrey said softly, her voice steady and musical. "I heard the knocking. I unbolted the chest. I have not spoken to Maisie since this afternoon."

Tristan slowly shifted his cold gaze across the room, taking in the numerous guests sitting frozen at the velvet dining chairs.
"Have you all finished your meals?" Tristan asked the room at large.
