Chapter 1

The opulent dining hall of the Vale estate was a masterpiece of cinematic luminance, bathed in a bright, natural light that chased away the bitter winter chill outside. There was no muddy yellow tint to the illumination; instead, the crystal chandeliers cast a crisp, warm golden glow across the carved walnut furniture and the cream marble columns. Fifty guests, comprising high-ranking syndicate capos, wealthy politicians, and elite socialites, occupied the velvet dining chairs lining the massive banquet table. The air was fragrant with the scent of roasted meats and the fresh evergreen garlands laced with red berries that ran the length of the table. A towering Christmas tree sparkled brilliantly in the corner, adorned with warm fairy lights, gold ornaments, and thick burgundy ribbons. The guests, their fair, rosy skin glowing under the clear light, conversed in crisp American accents, creating a festive mask over the lethal reality of the men breaking bread together.
At the head of the table sat Matthias Vale. At thirty-two, the mafia boss commanded the sprawling room with a quiet, undeniable masculinity. He was strikingly handsome, possessing broad, powerful shoulders that effortlessly filled out his tailored dark three-piece suit. His angular face was framed by naturally swept-back dark hair, his sharp jawline shadowed by very short, neat stubble. Refined, artistic tattoos utilizing negative space decorated the backs of his hands and fingers, standing in stark contrast to the heavy gold signet ring and the luxury wristwatch that caught the chandelier’s light. A small, delicate artistic tattoo peeked just above his crisp white collar.
"The holiday donations to the inner-city wards have been processed, Matthias," murmured Vincent, a senior capo seated to his right, leaning in close. "Your philanthropic image is immaculate."
"Do you believe philanthropy erases the blood on our ledgers, Vincent?" Matthias asked, his deep, controlled voice effortlessly cutting through the ambient noise. He spoke slowly, turning his signet ring.
"Not at all, Boss," Vincent chuckled nervously, raising his crystal glass. "I merely admire the political cover."
To Matthias’s left sat Coralie Shaw, his twenty-nine-year-old fiancée. She was draped in a luxurious emerald evening gown that clung perfectly to her figure. Heavy diamond earrings flashed with every tilt of her head. She maintained a polished, unwavering public smile, playing the role of the devoted, untouchable future wife to perfection.

"Let us leave the talk of ledgers for the morning, gentlemen," Coralie chimed in smoothly. "Tonight is Christmas Eve. We are here to celebrate our families, our success, and our future."
Moving silently through the periphery of the dining hall was Ada Hollis. The twenty-five-year-old housemaid navigated the velvet chairs with an exhausted, heartbreakingly vulnerable manner. She was breathtakingly beautiful, but her delicate features were marred by visible suffering. She wore a fitted black maid dress with a cinched waist, a short A-line skirt, a white apron, and a ruffled white maid headband. However, her pristine uniform was a ruin. Her dress was deeply creased, her apron was rumpled, and her headband sat slightly askew. Her dark hair was disheveled, and her expressive eyes were profoundly puffy and shadowed from prolonged, silent crying. She had been subjected to Coralie's relentless, cruel bullying all day, and her spirit was hanging by a thread.
