Chapter 3

The cinematic, warm golden light of the chandeliers seemed to sharpen, catching the terrified realization in Audrey’s eyes. She remained rooted to the spot beside the sideboard, unable to tear her gaze away from the heavy brass bolt that sealed the oversized wooden gift chest. The lively conversation of the fifty guests washed over her like static.

Tristan Vale, a man whose survival in the criminal underworld relied on an unparalleled hyper-awareness of his surroundings, immediately sensed the shift in the room's energy. He did not miss a single detail. He noticed the way the beautiful maid had suddenly gone rigid, her graceful movements halting completely.

Tristan stopped turning his signet ring. He slowly turned his head, his dark, swept-back hair catching the light. He followed Audrey’s paralyzed gaze, looking past the evergreens and the red berries, directly toward the oversized wooden gift chest sitting beside the Christmas tree.

He stared at the heavy brass bolt. He processed the silence radiating from the maid. Then, he looked directly at Audrey.

The cold, calculating intellect behind his handsome, angular face worked instantly. A maid did not freeze during dinner service unless something was catastrophically wrong.

"Audrey," Tristan said.

His voice was not loud, but it was incredibly deep and possessed a controlled, magnetic resonance that demanded absolute submission.

The effect on the room was instantaneous. The sheer, commanding authority in his tone sliced through the ambient chatter like a straight razor. Every single dinner guest at the long banquet table stopped eating. Forks hovered motionless over fine porcelain plates. Crystal glasses were lowered slowly back to the table. The polite, affluent conversation died in their throats, replaced by a suffocating, terrified silence. Dozens of faces turned toward the head of the table, watching the mafia boss direct his undivided, terrifying focus onto the gentle housemaid.

Audrey swallowed hard, her pulse racing. She met Tristan’s cold, unwavering gaze.

"What's inside?" Tristan asked, his words slow and measured.

The silence that followed was agonizing. The entire ballroom held its breath. The bright, luminous colors of the room felt suddenly interrogative. Audrey opened her mouth to speak, her lips trembling slightly as she prepared to break the cardinal rule of her employment and expose a member of the family.

"Sir, I..." Audrey began, her voice a fragile, melodic whisper that carried clearly in the dead-silent room. "I heard a noise."

"A noise?" Tristan repeated, his jaw tightening just a fraction. He did not look away from her. "From the chest?"

"Yes, Mr. Vale," Audrey confirmed, her expressive eyes darting nervously toward the fastened bolt again. "It sounded like... knocking. Someone is knocking."

A murmur of confusion rippled through the guests. A heavy wooden chest, fastened from the outside, with someone knocking from within.

Tristan’s broad shoulders squared beneath his tailored suit. The artistic tattoos on his hands flexed as he gripped the arms of his velvet dining chair. The danger in the room escalated from a simmering tension to an explosive, palpable threat. He was preparing to rise, preparing to tear the heavy lid off the box himself to see what had disrupted his household.

Before he could push his chair back, a smooth, manicured hand reached out to intercept the moment.
