Chapter 1

The crystal chandeliers suspended from the vaulted ceilings cast a brilliant, warm golden light across the cream marble columns of the Hartwell estate. The dining hall was a masterpiece of holiday opulence, the air thick with the scent of roasted meats and the fresh evergreen garlands laced with bright red berries that ran the length of the banquet table. A towering Christmas tree stood majestically in the corner, sparkling with warm fairy lights, delicate gold ornaments, and cascading burgundy ribbons. Fifty guests, comprising high-ranking syndicate capos, wealthy politicians, and elite socialites, occupied the plush velvet dining chairs. They conversed in crisp American accents, their fair, rosy skin glowing under the cinematic illumination. It was a festive mask, meticulously worn over the lethal reality of the men breaking bread together.
At the head of the table sat Adrian Hartwell. At thirty-three, the mafia boss commanded the sprawling room with a quiet, undeniable masculinity. He was strikingly handsome, possessing broad, powerful shoulders that effortlessly filled out his tailored dark three-piece suit. His angular face was framed by naturally swept-back dark hair, his sharp jawline shadowed by very short, neat stubble. Refined, artistic tattoos utilizing negative space decorated the backs of his hands and fingers, standing in stark contrast to the heavy gold signet ring and the luxury wristwatch that caught the chandelier’s light. A small, delicate ink design peeked just above his crisp white collar.
"The northern shipping routes have been entirely secured, Adrian," murmured Vincent, a senior capo seated to his right, leaning in close so his voice wouldn't carry. "Your negotiations in Chicago were apparently very persuasive."
"Are you surprised that our partners suddenly found clarity, Vincent?" Adrian asked, his deep, measured voice dropping an octave. He spoke slowly, turning his signet ring thoughtfully.
"Not at all, Boss," Vincent chuckled, raising his crystal glass. "I merely admire the efficiency."
To Adrian’s left sat Celia Arden, his twenty-nine-year-old fiancée. She was draped in a luxurious emerald satin evening gown that clung perfectly to her figure. Heavy diamond earrings flashed with every tilt of her head. She maintained a polished, unwavering public smile, playing the role of the devoted, untouchable future wife to perfection.
"Let us leave the talk of shipping routes and borders for the morning, gentlemen," Celia chimed in, her voice smooth and practiced as she held up her sleek smartphone. "Tonight is Christmas Eve. We are here to celebrate our families, our success, and our perfect future."
"A beautiful sentiment, Celia," agreed a wealthy donor from across the table, raising his gold-rimmed porcelain teacup. "To the future of the Hartwell family."
"I want a photograph of the head table before the dessert course," Celia announced, tapping the screen of her phone. "The lighting right now is absolutely flawless. Adrian, darling, sit up just a bit straighter. We need to project strength for the families."
Adrian did not adjust his posture. His cold, observant eyes scanned the room, sweeping past the laughing guests and the towering Christmas tree.

"Strength is not projected through a camera lens, Celia," Adrian stated slowly, his voice completely devoid of warmth. "It is felt. Where is my son?"
Celia’s polished smile did not waver, though her fingers tightened slightly around her phone. "Leo prefers the quiet, Adrian. The noise of the gala always upsets him. I thought it best to let him rest."
