Chapter 1

The sprawling banquet hall of the Ashford estate was a breathtaking monument to wealth, bathed in the soft, elegant warmth of a cinematic Christmas Eve. High above, tiered crystal chandeliers cast a luminous, golden light that danced across the cream marble columns and the meticulously carved walnut furniture. The heavy scent of pine and roasted meats mingled in the air, drifting through the evergreen garlands and bright red berries that decorated the gilded wall panels. A towering Christmas tree dominated the far corner, sparkling brilliantly with warm fairy lights, heavy gold ornaments, and sweeping burgundy ribbons. There was no muddy yellow cast to the room; the clean whites of the table linens and the natural, fair, rosy skin of the assembled guests were illuminated in flawless clarity. Dozens of the most powerful syndicate members and their families occupied the velvet dining chairs, their crystal glasses and gold-rimmed porcelain clinking in a symphony of high-society indulgence.

At the head of this majestic table sat Silas Ashford. At thirty-two, he possessed the rugged, undeniably masculine presence of a mafia boss. His broad shoulders effortlessly filled out a tailored dark three-piece suit. His angular face was framed by naturally swept-back dark hair and very short, meticulous stubble. A heavy family signet ring and a luxury wristwatch gleamed under the chandeliers. Intricate, artistic tattoos utilizing negative space decorated his hands and fingers with generous spacing, and a small, distinct artistic tattoo peeked just above his crisp white collar.

"The holiday decorations are absolutely exquisite this year, Vivienne," an older capo remarked, raising his crystal glass toward the woman seated next to Silas. "You have truly outdone yourself."

Vivienne Cross, Silas’s twenty-nine-year-old fiancée, offered a polished, reassuring public smile. She wore a luxurious emerald evening gown that clung perfectly to her curves, paired with dazzling diamond earrings that caught the light with every movement. "Thank you, Marcus," Vivienne replied smoothly, her American accent crisp and elegant. "I believe Christmas should be a time of overwhelming beauty and generosity. We have so much to be thankful for this year."

"Indeed," Marcus replied, nodding respectfully. "And how is the boss enjoying the evening?"

Silas did not look at the capo immediately. He took a slow sip of his bourbon. "The evening is proceeding exactly as planned, Marcus," Silas said, speaking slowly in a deep, controlled voice that instantly commanded the room's attention. "We are celebrating survival, above all else."

Sitting quietly near Silas was six-year-old Lily Ashford. The little girl wore a beautiful burgundy Christmas dress and a soft cream cardigan. Her fair skin was pale, and her eyes held a quiet sadness that had lingered for the past six months, ever since the tragic fire that had supposedly claimed her mother.

Moving silently through the periphery of the room was Nora Ellis. At twenty-five, she was a beautiful, gentle maid with incredibly delicate features and graceful posture. She wore an elegant fitted black maid dress, a pristine white apron, a white collar and cuffs, and a white ruffled maid headband. She carried a heavy brass candlestick, navigating the narrow space between the velvet chairs. Her expressive eyes darted nervously toward a heavy paneled door situated just beside the head of the banquet table. It was a door supposedly leading to an old storage room, secured on the outside by a heavy, exterior brass bolt. Nora stepped closer to it, her heart hammering against her ribs.
