Chapter 5

The silence in the dining room was absolute, save for Bianca’s muffled sobbing from the floor and the faint, rhythmic ticking of a grandfather clock in the hallway. The capos and bodyguards remained perfectly still, their hands hovering near their holstered weapons, waiting for their Boss to give the final command. The bright, unyielding light of the room offered no shadows to hide in, exposing the fractured, rotting core of the Romano family for everyone to see.
Alessandra walked over to the bodyguard holding Caleb. She gently took her son back into her arms, cradling him carefully against her chest. Caleb buried his face into her neck, his small hands clutching the crimson fabric of her gown, his breathing still shallow and ragged from the kick to his ribs.
She turned and faced the remaining members of her family. Her father, Vincent, had backed away from the door, his patriarchal authority completely shattered by the brutal display of violence. He looked at his youngest daughter with a mixture of awe and profound fear, finally realizing that the girl he had raised was gone, replaced by a ruthless, uncompromising sovereign.
Alessandra ignored him. Her dark, unreadable eyes locked entirely on Francesca.
The sixty-four-year-old matriarch was standing completely rigid, her pearl necklace trembling slightly against her collarbone. The cold, aristocratic superiority had drained from her fair face, leaving behind a pale, fragile mask of sheer terror. She looked at Bianca bleeding on the floor, then back at Alessandra, her mouth opening and closing without producing a single sound.
Alessandra slowly closed the distance, her heels clicking methodically against the hardwood border of the room. She stopped three feet from her mother, her presence suffocatingly intimidating.
"My son can’t breathe," Alessandra said. Her voice was dead calm, a low, mesmerizing whisper that carried more lethal intent than a screaming threat ever could. She tilted her head slightly, her pretty, adorable features forming a mask of pure, sociopathic detachment. "And you tied up my four-year-old child so your favorite grandchild could hurt him."
Francesca swallowed hard, her eyes darting nervously toward the heavily armed capos standing behind her daughter. "Alessandra... you must understand... the boy needs to learn toughness if he is to survive in our world. It was a lesson."
"A lesson," Alessandra repeated softly, the word tasting like ash in her mouth.
She looked down at Caleb, whose small body shuddered with another painful gasp. She tightened her protective grip around him, then slowly raised her gaze back to her mother, her eyes burning with an icy, unforgiving fire.
"You think you understand survival, Mother," Alessandra murmured, her American accent crisp and sharp in the quiet room. "You think you understand strength because you watched my father rule from the sidelines. But you have no idea what true power looks like."
Alessandra turned her head slightly, addressing the broad-shouldered capo standing nearest to the door.
"Lock down the estate," Alessandra commanded, her voice echoing off the framed family portraits on the walls. "No one leaves this room. Not my father. Not my sister. And especially not my mother."

Francesca’s eyes widened in genuine, suffocating panic. "Alessandra, what are you doing? You cannot hold your own family hostage!"
"You are no longer my family," Alessandra replied coldly, turning her back on them and walking toward the exit. "You are just prisoners waiting for sentencing."
