Chapter 25

The sun was just beginning to set over Chicago, casting long, dark shadows across the industrial district. The Morreti meatpacking plant stood like a grim fortress, surrounded by high chain-link fences and heavily armed guards.
Inside the cavernous, refrigerated main floor, Vargas sat at a makeshift desk, reviewing shipping manifests. He was a ruthless, scarred man who had built his reputation on brutality. He believed he had secured the city, entirely unaware that the poison had already been delivered.
Carlo stood nervously by the door, having just delivered the three crates of vintage wine. He had played the part of the submissive, defeated capo perfectly, offering the expensive bottles as a tribute to the new Boss.
"The men are enjoying the wine, Boss," a guard reported to Vargas, laughing loudly. "It's good stuff. Heavy."
"Let them drink," Vargas sneered, leaning back in his chair. "They earned a celebration. Tomorrow, we lock down the Romano ports."
But tomorrow would never come for Vargas.
Thirty minutes later, the heavy, metallic silence of the meatpacking plant was profound. The guards who had greedily consumed the spiked wine were slumped against concrete pillars or passed out on the cold floor, completely incapacitated by the potent, tasteless neuro-sedative Alessandra had engineered.
Carlo quickly unlocked the heavy steel side doors.
Alessandra stepped into the frigid air of the plant, flanked by Silas and two elite operatives. She was dressed in her sleek black pantsuit, moving with fluid, predatory silence. She didn't carry a heavy assault rifle; she held only her compact, suppressed sidearm.
They moved methodically through the labyrinth of hanging meat carcasses, bypassing the sleeping guards without making a single sound. When they reached the makeshift office, Alessandra signaled for her men to halt. She stepped into the doorway alone.
Vargas looked up from his desk, his eyes widening in sheer, unadulterated shock. He reached frantically for the heavy revolver resting on his desk.
"Don't," Alessandra whispered, her voice a low, mesmerizing hum that carried absolute, terrifying authority. She raised her suppressed weapon, aiming it squarely at his chest.

Vargas froze, his hand hovering inches from the gun. "How did you get in here?" he gasped, his brutal facade crumbling.
"I didn't break in, Vargas," Alessandra said, a cold, sociopathic detachment settling over her beautiful features. "You invited me in."
