Chapter 2

The words hung in the brilliantly lit dining room like suspended drops of poison. The sheer, breathtaking cruelty of her mother’s statement paralyzed the surrounding relatives for a fraction of a second. The capos and bodyguards, hardened men who enforced Alessandra's will on the streets, froze in their tailored suits, unsure of how to navigate a direct conflict between the reigning Boss and the former matriarch of the family.

Alessandra did not argue. She did not scream at her mother. The maternal instinct overriding her mafia training drove her straight to the floor.

She dropped to her knees beside Caleb, the luxurious fabric of her crimson evening gown pooling around her on the carpet. She ignored the expensive silk as she reached for the decorative sash binding her son’s small wrists to the overturned chair. Her manicured fingers, usually so composed, trembled slightly as she frantically tore at the thick knots. Realizing the fabric was too tight, she reached down to her thigh, retrieving a small, razor-sharp tactical blade she kept strapped beneath her dress.

With one swift, precise motion, Alessandra sliced through the silk sash, freeing Caleb’s arms.

"I've got you, baby," Alessandra murmured, her American accent thick with desperate reassurance as she pulled him carefully against her chest. "Mommy’s here. You're safe."

Caleb’s small body was rigid with pain. He gasped for air, his tiny chest hitching rhythmically as he struggled to inflate his lungs. His rosy cheeks were flushed a deep, feverish red, and tears streamed silently down his face, soaking into the bodice of his mother’s expensive gown.

"Mom…" Caleb whispered, his voice incredibly weak, trembling with the residual shock of the assault. He buried his face into the crook of her neck, his tiny hands clutching her pearl necklace as if it were a lifeline.

"Shh, don't try to talk," Alessandra coaxed, gently rubbing his back, her eyes scanning his ribs for signs of serious internal injury.

But Caleb forced the words out, desperate to be heard in a house that constantly silenced him. He looked up at his mother, his blue eyes wide and terrified.

"Mom… I told Grandma I couldn’t breathe before you came," Caleb wheezed, his voice breaking on the final word.

Alessandra’s hands stopped moving. The blood in her veins seemed to freeze entirely, replaced by a cold, liquid nitrogen of pure, unadulterated fury. She looked up from her son’s tear-stained face, her gaze slowly traveling up the length of Francesca’s elegant, pearl-draped figure. The older woman was watching them with the bored detachment of someone observing an annoying insect.

Her mother hadn't just ignored the assault; she had allowed it to happen. She had stood by and watched a ten-year-old boy tie up and beat a four-year-old child who couldn't even defend himself, all while Caleb begged for air.

Alessandra slowly stood up, cradling Caleb securely against her hip. The pretty, adorable features that often caused her enemies to underestimate her had hardened into an expression of absolute, terrifying lethality. She was no longer just a mother holding a bruised child; she was the head of the Romano organization, and treason had just occurred in her own dining room.
