Chapter 27

The signed confession, along with the encrypted hard drives detailing the East Coast coalition's financial network, were secured in Silas's briefcase. Alessandra watched as Carlo and her operatives quietly escorted the defeated, handcuffed Vargas out the back doors of the meatpacking plant, bound for a secure Romano holding facility where he would await his "anonymous" delivery to the FBI.

The surgical strike was flawless. Not a single shot had been fired, and the East Coast's proxy army had been dismantled without a drop of blood hitting the floor.

"The federal authorities will freeze their assets by morning, Boss," Silas reported, returning to Alessandra's side. "The coalition will be entirely paralyzed by investigations and audits. They won't have the resources to mount an offensive against our shipping lanes."

"Good," Alessandra said, buttoning her tailored jacket. The gold signet ring on her finger gleamed in the harsh, industrial lighting. "Let them drown in federal paperwork. The Romano syndicate remains untouched."

They returned to the estate just as the sun began to rise, casting a brilliant, cinematic light over the sprawling mansion. Alessandra felt the deep, bone-weary exhaustion settling into her muscles, but her mind was calm. She had successfully defended her empire against a multi-front war, securing the future for her son.

She walked directly to the east wing, pushing softly through the double doors of the medical suite. Caleb was no longer there. Panic flared instantly in her chest, the maternal instinct overriding her exhaustion. She sprinted down the hallway, bursting into Caleb's private bedroom.

She stopped dead in the doorway, the tension instantly melting away, replaced by a profound, overwhelming sense of peace.

Caleb was sitting on his large, plush bed, laughing happily. His rosy cheeks were flushed with pure joy, completely healed from the trauma he had endured. Sitting beside him on the floor, holding a small toy race car, was Mason. The ten-year-old boy was smiling genuinely, carefully showing his younger cousin how the car worked, completely devoid of the cruel, entitled smirk he used to wear.

Alessandra watched them for a long moment, leaning against the doorframe. She had not only protected her son; she had broken the cycle of toxicity that had infected her family for generations.

"Mom!" Caleb cheered, spotting her in the doorway. He scrambled off the bed and ran into her arms.

Alessandra caught him, pulling him protectively against her chest, burying her face in his soft hair. "I'm right here, baby. I'm right here."
