Chapter 10

The estate felt vast and empty in the wake of the forced exodus. The bright, cinematic lighting remained, but the oppressive, toxic energy that had suffocated the Romano family for years had finally vanished. Alessandra stood in the foyer for a long moment, simply breathing in the clean, unburdened air. She had secured her throne, protected her son, and ruthlessly eliminated the greatest threat to her reign.

She turned and walked over to Mason, who was still sitting rigidly on the velvet bench, his hands clasped tightly in his lap.

"Stand up, Mason," Alessandra commanded, her voice firm but devoid of the malice she had directed at his mother.

The ten-year-old boy scrambled to his feet instantly, terrified of making a mistake. He didn't look her in the eye, keeping his gaze fixed firmly on the marble floor.

"Look at me," she said.

Mason slowly raised his head, his blue eyes wide and shining with unshed tears.

"You are going to live in this house, and you are going to learn how to be a man," Alessandra told him, her tone absolute. "You will apologize to Caleb every single day until he forgives you. You will not raise your voice, you will not strike anyone, and you will obey my orders without question. Do you understand?"

"Yes, Aunt Alessandra," Mason whispered, his voice trembling.

"Good. Go to your room. Silas will be up shortly to discuss your new schedule."

Mason nodded quickly, practically running up the grand staircase to escape her intense, intimidating presence.

Alessandra watched him go, feeling a twinge of satisfaction. He was malleable; he could be salvaged. She turned her attention back to the east wing, her heart softening as she thought of her own son.

She walked quietly into the medical suite. The room was dim, illuminated only by the soft glow of the monitoring equipment. Caleb was sleeping peacefully on the examination table, his small chest rising and falling in a steady, even rhythm. The harsh lines of pain that had contorted his rosy face earlier were gone, replaced by the innocent serenity of childhood.

Dr. Evans looked up from his charts as she entered, offering a reassuring smile. "He's resting comfortably, Boss. The pain meds are doing their job."

"Thank you, Doctor," Alessandra whispered, stepping up to the side of the bed. She gently brushed a stray curl from Caleb’s forehead, her heavy signet ring cool against his warm skin.

She had done what she had to do. She had burned her own family to the ground to ensure that her son would never have to experience the cruelty of their world. But as she stood there, watching him sleep, a cold, unsettling thought crept into her mind.

Nature abhorred a vacuum, and the sudden, violent removal of the entire senior leadership of the Romano syndicate would send shockwaves through the criminal underworld. The other families would smell blood in the water. They would see her actions not as strength, but as instability.

Her phone buzzed in the hidden pocket of her gown. She pulled it out, the bright screen illuminating the dark room. It was an encrypted message from an unknown number.

We heard about the early retirement. The Chicago Commission expects a meeting by dawn. Come alone.

Alessandra stared at the message, her beautiful, imposing face hardening into a mask of pure, calculated lethality. The war inside her house was over, but the war for the city was just beginning. She slipped the phone back into her dress, her dark eyes flashing with a dangerous promise, ready to show the world exactly what a mother defending her child was truly capable of.
