Chapter 9

Adrian unbuttoned his suit jacket, rolling his broad shoulders to release the coiled tension. He drew a heavy, suppressed pistol from his shoulder holster, checking the chamber with a sharp, metallic click. The tailored dark three-piece suit no longer looked like evening wear; it looked like armor.

He turned and strode purposefully out of the grand salon, navigating the bright, airy corridors of the Shaw mansion. He moved with a brutal, masculine grace, his leather shoes silent on the thick carpet, heading straight for the second-floor library where he had sent Nora.

He approached the heavy oak double doors of the library. Two of his own enforcers stood guard, their hands resting on their weapons. They nodded respectfully as the boss approached.

"Is the perimeter secure?" Adrian asked, his deep voice carrying a quiet urgency.

"Yes, Boss. No one has entered or exited," the lead guard confirmed, stepping aside to push the heavy doors open for him.

Adrian stepped into the library. The room was lined with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and bathed in the soft, warm glow of a roaring fireplace. Maisie was sitting on a plush leather sofa, clutching her small stuffed reindeer, looking small and fragile in her cream Christmas dress. Sitting on the floor right beside her, speaking in a low, soothing voice, was Nora Ellis.

The maid had removed her rumpled white apron, folding it neatly over her lap. Her black dress was still creased, but her delicate features radiated a fierce, protective warmth. As Adrian entered, Nora immediately stood up, smoothing her skirt, her expressive eyes darting to his face to read the outcome of the confrontation downstairs.

Adrian holstered his weapon and walked slowly toward her, his towering presence completely enveloping her smaller frame. The terrifying aura of the mafia boss vanished entirely, replaced by the profound, unprotected vulnerability of a man looking at his savior.

"Are you unharmed, Nora?" Adrian asked, his deep voice softening into a register he reserved only for her.

"I am safe, sir," Nora whispered, looking up into his dark, intense eyes. "Is it over?"

"Vivienne is locked in the basement," Adrian answered, his dark eyes tracing the delicate lines of Nora's face. "She will never threaten you or your daughter again. You have my word."

Nora let out a long, shuddering breath, the tension finally leaving her graceful posture. "I am so sorry I didn't tell you sooner. I was so scared."

"You kept me alive in the dark," Adrian said softly, his voice thick with emotion. He reached out, his tattooed hand gently resting on her shoulder. "You endured unimaginable cruelty to protect your child, and you still found the mercy to feed a blindfolded stranger. I owe you a debt I can never fully repay."

"You don't owe me anything, sir," Nora whispered, her breath hitching slightly under his intense scrutiny.

"I owe you everything," Adrian corrected, taking a slow step closer. "You are no longer a maid. From this moment on, you are under my direct, personal protection. Whatever you need, whatever you want, you have it."

Nora’s eyes widened in shock. "Sir, I... I don't know what to say."

"Say you will trust me," Adrian said, his tone shifting to a deeply vulnerable, quiet plea.

Before Nora could answer, a frantic, heavy pounding echoed from the hallway outside the library.
