Chapter 5

The revelation that the future bride of the West syndicate had secretly orchestrated the kidnapping and torture of her own fiancé sent a shockwave of absolute terror through the grand salon. The guests, hardened criminals and high-society aristocrats alike, held their breath. No one dared to move a muscle under the crushing weight of the silence.

Vivienne Shaw backed away, her burgundy satin gown rustling violently. Desperate to regain control of the narrative before Adrian unleashed his legendary wrath, she smoothed her fabric and lifted her chin, attempting to project an aura of untouchable aristocratic authority.

"Adrian, you must listen to reason," Vivienne stated, her American accent dripping with a manufactured, icy desperation. "The child is confused. She heard the staff gossiping about your rescue and twisted the words! You cannot take the word of a child and a lying maid over your future wife!"

Adrian did not look at Vivienne. His intense, dark eyes remained locked on Nora. The gentle maid was trembling violently, her delicate hands resting protectively on her daughter's shoulders.

"Nora," Adrian said, his voice returning to a deep, measured calm that was far more terrifying than his shout. "Look at me."

Nora slowly lifted her head. Her highly expressive eyes were brimming with tears, her fair skin pale with the trauma she had endured alone in the dark with him. She met Adrian’s gaze. She saw the total, uncompromising demand for the truth burning in his dark eyes.

Nora’s fingers tightened frantically around the crimson ribbon of the Christmas tree, crushing the velvet fabric in her grip. She closed her eyes for a brief second. She steadied her trembling breathing, accepting that the lie was over, and that her only chance of survival was to throw herself on the mercy of the apex predator standing before her.

She opened her eyes, holding his gaze with a fierce, protective courage.

"You were blindfolded," Nora confessed, her voice breaking with raw, unprotected emotion. "I fed you."

The devastating confession dropped onto the polished marble floor like toxic acid. A collective, audible gasp erupted from the velvet sofas nearby. Murmurs of absolute shock and outrage rippled through the syndicate members. The woman destined to be the queen of the West syndicate had not only orchestrated the kidnapping, but she had forced a helpless servant to participate in the torture under threat.

"I had to," Nora sobbed, pulling Maisie flush against her rumpled apron. "She told me if I didn't keep you quiet and fed, she would kill my daughter. I didn't know it was you at first. I swear to God, I didn't know. But I couldn't let you starve."

Adrian stared at her, absorbing the magnitude of the betrayal and the terrifying reality of his captivity. The woman who smelled of lavender, the trembling hands that had kept him alive when he was chained in the freezing dark—it was the disheveled maid standing in front of him.

"That is an outrageous lie!" Vivienne screamed, her polished facade completely shattering. "She is trying to turn you against me to extort this family! I negotiated your release! I saved you!"

"You staged a rescue to play the hero," Adrian deduced slowly, the horrific scope of her manipulation becoming clear. "You broke me down just so you could pretend to build me back up."
