Chapter 2

The dessert buffet was a sprawling display of culinary excess, laden with spun sugar, heavy creams, and festive spices. Adrian stood before it, his mind still partially trapped in the dark basement of his captivity. The transition back into the bright, airy world of high society had been jarring. He picked up a small porcelain bowl containing a rich, dark pudding, picking up a silver spoon.
"Is the selection to your liking, Mr. West?" a caterer asked nervously, hovering nearby.
"It is fine," Adrian replied, his American accent smooth and dismissive. "Leave me be."
As the caterer scrambled away, Adrian turned his attention to the periphery of the room. Near the towering Christmas tree, a young woman was adjusting the crimson ribbons on the lower branches. It was Nora Ellis. At twenty-five, the maid possessed a breathtaking, gentle beauty, with delicate features and highly expressive eyes. But tonight, she looked exhausted, moving with a deeply vulnerable manner. She wore a fitted black maid dress, but it was noticeably creased. Her pristine white apron was rumpled, and her white ruffled maid headband sat entirely crooked in her slightly disheveled hair.
"Mommy, does this ribbon look pretty?" a small voice asked.
Six-year-old Maisie Ellis stood beside her mother, dressed impeccably in a beautiful cream Christmas dress. She was holding a small stuffed reindeer, her fair, rosy cheeks flushed with the excitement of the holiday.
"It looks perfect, sweetie," Nora whispered, her voice trembling slightly as she helped the little girl straighten the ribbon. "Just keep your voice down, okay? We have to be very quiet while we work."
Adrian watched them for a moment, an inexplicable tension tightening his chest. He looked back down at the small porcelain bowl in his tattooed hand. He scooped up a small amount of the dark dessert and placed it in his mouth.
It was an orange-and-clove pudding.
The moment the flavors hit his tongue, Adrian’s entire body froze. The silver spoon stopped dead in the air, hovering inches above the porcelain bowl. The ambient hum of the crowded Christmas reception vanished from his ears, replaced by the deafening, echoing drip of water hitting a concrete floor.
He was suddenly back in the dark. He was blindfolded, his hands bound. He was starving, shivering, and disoriented. And then, a presence had entered the room. Someone smelling faintly of lavender soap. Soft, trembling hands had guided a spoon to his bruised lips. He had been fed, kept alive in the dark by a captive angel. And the food she had fed him, the distinct, unmistakable, overwhelming taste that had burned itself into his memory, was orange and clove.
Recognition settled across Adrian’s sharp, angular face, turning his handsome features into a mask of cold, terrifying realization. He lowered the spoon slowly. The recipe was not generic. The texture, the heavy spice, the specific zest—it was identical. He slowly turned his head, his dark, sweeping gaze locking directly onto the disheveled maid standing by the Christmas tree.

"Did you make the desserts for tonight, Nora?" Adrian asked quietly, taking a slow step toward her.
Nora stiffened, her hands freezing on the crimson ribbon. "Yes, Mr. West. Miss Vivienne requested my family's recipe for the pudding."
