Chapter 1

The grand foyer and adjoining salon of the Vale mansion were a breathtaking spectacle of wealth and power, completely flooded with a brilliant, warm golden light that entirely lacked the heavy, muddy yellow cast common to lesser estates. Cascading crystal chandeliers hung suspended from the high, painted ceilings, their myriad prisms catching the illumination and throwing radiant, dancing reflections across the polished marble floors. It was a space designed for opulence and intimidation. Carved walnut furniture lined the perimeter, framing the fifty elite guests, capos, and relatives seated on burgundy velvet sofas. A towering Christmas tree sparkled brilliantly with thousands of golden fairy lights and heavy crimson ornaments. Ivory candles glowed steadily in ornate brass candelabras, nestled perfectly among thick evergreen garlands that framed an antique mahogany wardrobe beside the salon entrance.

At the center of this majestic display stood Nathan Vale. Thirty-two years old, he possessed the rugged, undeniably masculine presence of a mafia boss at the height of his reign. His broad shoulders effortlessly filled out a flawlessly tailored dark three-piece suit that seemed to absorb the light around him. His face was a landscape of harsh, aristocratic angles, featuring a sharp, angular jaw dusted with extremely short, meticulous stubble. His dark hair was naturally swept back, framing a face that commanded absolute, terrifying authority. A heavy family signet ring and a luxury wristwatch gleamed under the chandeliers. Artistic tattoos utilizing negative space decorated his hands and fingers with generous, deliberate spacing, and a small, distinct artistic tattoo peeked just above his crisp white collar.

"The holiday arrangements are absolutely flawless this year, Daphne," an older capo remarked, raising his crystal glass of bourbon toward the woman standing at Nathan’s side.

"Thank you, Marcus," Daphne Wren replied smoothly, her American accent dripping with practiced, aristocratic charm. "I believe Christmas should be a time of overwhelming beauty and perfection. We have so much to celebrate this year."

At twenty-nine, Nathan’s fiancée was a vision of high-society perfection. She wore a luxurious emerald satin gown that clung flawlessly to her curves, her fair, rosy skin glowing beneath the warm light. Dazzling diamond earrings swayed gently from her lobes. Her public manner was impeccable, radiating a polished, reassuring smile that effectively masked the cold, calculating ambition simmering underneath.

"And where is the young heir tonight?" Marcus asked, glancing around the crowded room. "I brought a special gift for little Evan."

"He is playing a game, Marcus," Daphne answered, her smile never wavering, though her eyes remained hard. "He will be out to join us shortly."

Moving frantically through the periphery of the room was Elise Hart. At twenty-five, the maid possessed a breathtaking, gentle beauty, with a petite build, delicate features, and bright, highly expressive eyes. But tonight, she moved with a deeply vulnerable, exhausted manner. Her fitted black maid dress was noticeably creased, her pristine white apron was rumpled, and her white ruffled maid headband sat entirely crooked in her slightly disheveled hair.

"Elise, what are you doing?" another maid whispered, grabbing her arm near the silk drapes. "You are supposed to be serving the champagne."

"I can't find him, Sarah," Elise replied, her voice trembling with barely suppressed panic. "I've checked the nursery, the kitchens, the library. Evan is missing."

"Miss Wren said he was playing hide-and-seek," Sarah hissed, looking nervously toward the boss. "Leave it be. You know how she gets if we interfere with her discipline."

"This isn't discipline," Elise breathed, her eyes darting across the grand foyer. "He is terrified of the dark. He wouldn't hide for this long."
