Chapter 6

The opulent grand salon was suffocatingly tense. The warm golden light cascading from the chandeliers seemed to mock the dark, vicious betrayal that had just been exposed. Vivienne Shaw stood near the dessert buffet, her luxurious burgundy gown suddenly looking like a target painted on her back.

"Adrian, darling, please," Vivienne pleaded, her voice trembling as she realized her meticulously crafted coup was unraveling spectacularly. "You are letting your trauma cloud your judgment. I would never hurt you. My family brings the entire eastern shipping route to this alliance. You need me."

Adrian’s sharp jawline tightened, the muscles ticking beneath his extremely short stubble. He did not yell. The cold, unyielding armor of the mafia boss slammed firmly into place. He turned his broad, masculine shoulders, casting a formidable shadow over the exquisite Christmas display.

Nora continued to weep quietly, her hands gripping her daughter. Vivienne, realizing that her pleas were falling on deaf ears, shifted her tactics. She understood the primal nature of the world they lived in, and she resorted to the only weapon she had left: absolute, ruthless leverage.

Vivienne took a step closer to Nora. Her eyes briefly flicked down toward the six-year-old girl in the cream Christmas dress before returning to the maid's tear-streaked face.

Vivienne’s public smile remained fixed on her face, a grotesque mask of high-society charm, but her voice dropped into a venomous, lethal whisper meant only for the maid.

"Keep talking," Vivienne threatened softly, the diamonds swinging from her ears. "Your daughter pays for it."

The sheer audacity of the threat, delivered in the presence of the mafia boss, was staggering. She believed her political status made her completely immune to the consequences of her psychopathy.

Nora gasped, stumbling backward and dragging Maisie behind her. The terror in her expressive eyes intensified, her protective instincts overriding everything else.

But Adrian had heard the whisper.

The artistic negative-space tattoos on his hands stood out starkly as he moved with preternatural speed. He stepped smoothly into the space, positioning his broad, masculine body deliberately between Vivienne and Nora. It was a physical shield, an unmistakable declaration of absolute protection that stripped away Vivienne's authority in a single, fluid movement.

Adrian slowly set the small porcelain bowl of orange-and-clove pudding down on a nearby side table. The clink of the porcelain against the marble echoed like a judge's gavel in the silent room.

Nora immediately drew Maisie close, hiding the little girl behind the protective wall of Adrian's tailored dark suit. She buried her face in the child's hair, her rumpled white apron shaking as she wept in relief.

Adrian rested his tattooed hand lightly on the side table, right beside the untouched remainder of the pudding. He did not raise a hand to strike his fiancée. He simply turned his head and watched Vivienne with cold, unwavering attention.

"Did you just threaten a child in my presence, Vivienne?" Adrian asked, his deep voice a low, vibrating hum of impending violence.

Vivienne’s smile finally disappeared. The color drained from her fair, aristocratic face as she looked into the pitch-black eyes of the man she had tortured. She was no longer facing a broken captive; she was facing the apex predator of the American syndicate.
