Chapter 3

The absolute stillness of Adrian West sent an immediate, chilling ripple through the grand salon. The clinking of crystal glasses and the soft scraping of silver against porcelain ceased entirely within his immediate radius, the silence spreading outward like a shockwave until it consumed the entire room. One by one, every single dinner guest stopped eating and speaking, turning their heads toward the dessert buffet. The warm golden light cascading from the chandeliers seemed to freeze in the air, highlighting the sudden, suffocating tension that had gripped the syndicate.

Adrian did not look at the elite guests, nor did he look at his fiancée standing across the room. He slowly walked forward, closing the distance between the buffet and the Christmas tree. His broad shoulders cast a formidable shadow over the champagne velvet sofas. He stopped just a few feet away from the maid.

The cold, unyielding armor he wore as the mafia boss slipped for a fraction of a second, revealing a profound, urgent questioning. The artistic negative-space tattoos on his hands flexed as he gripped the small porcelain bowl. He looked at the trembling maid, taking in her pale, rosy skin, the sheer terror in her expressive eyes, and the rumpled, disheveled state of her uniform.

"Adrian, darling, is something wrong with the food?" Vivienne asked, her voice projecting clearly across the silent marble floor as she began to walk toward him. Her polished smile strained at the edges.

Adrian ignored his fiancée completely. His intense, dark eyes remained fixed on Nora's face, stripping away the layers of her fear to find the truth hidden underneath.

"Nora," Adrian said. His voice was deep, slow, and incredibly controlled, pausing deliberately after her name to let the weight of his attention settle over her. "Where have I tasted this?"

The question hung in the bright, luminous air, demanding an answer that would dictate the survival of everyone standing in the room. The entire syndicate was staring at the housemaid. Capos shifted uncomfortably in their tailored suits. No one dared to breathe too loudly. The sheer, masculine power radiating from Adrian's frame promised absolute destruction if he was lied to.

Nora stood paralyzed, her delicate features pale with shock. She felt the crushing weight of fifty gazes, but the only eyes that mattered were the ones burning into hers. She knew that answering this question would either save her and her daughter, or it would seal her death warrant.

"It is a common recipe, Mr. West," Nora whispered, her voice shaking violently. "Many people use orange and clove during the holidays."

"I am not asking about many people, Nora," Adrian replied smoothly, taking another slow step closer to her. "I am asking you. I have tasted this exact pudding before. Recently. Under very specific circumstances. And I want to know how a maid in the Shaw household possesses the culinary signature of the place where I was held captive."

"Adrian, you are making a scene," Vivienne hissed, arriving at his side and placing a manicured hand on his arm. "The trauma of your ordeal is clearly confusing your senses. Let the girl go back to her duties."

"Do not touch me," Adrian commanded softly, his tone so lethal that Vivienne pulled her hand back as if she had been burned. "I am waiting for an answer, Nora."
