Chapter 1

The grand salon of the Ashford estate was a breathtaking spectacle of wealth and power, entirely flooded with a brilliant, warm golden light that banished the freezing winter night outside. Tiered crystal chandeliers hung suspended from the vaulted ceilings, their myriad prisms catching the illumination and throwing radiant, dancing reflections across the polished marble surfaces and gilded mirrors lining the walls. A massive carved marble fireplace dominated the far wall, radiating a fierce, crackling heat, framed perfectly by thick evergreen garlands and bright red berries. Clustered around the hearth were luxurious burgundy velvet sofas, currently occupied by the most elite, dangerous figures of the American syndicate. In the corner, a towering Christmas tree sparkled brilliantly with thousands of golden fairy lights, delicate glass ornaments, and heavy crimson ribbons cascading down its branches.
At the center of this opulent display stood Reid Ashford. Thirty-two years old, he possessed the rugged, undeniably masculine presence of a mafia boss at the height of his reign. His broad shoulders effortlessly filled out a flawlessly tailored black three-piece suit that seemed to absorb the light around him. His face was a landscape of harsh, aristocratic angles, featuring a sharp, angular jaw dusted with very short, meticulous stubble. His dark hair was naturally swept back, framing a face that commanded absolute, terrifying authority. A heavy family signet ring and a luxury wristwatch gleamed under the chandeliers. Intricate, artistic tattoos utilizing negative space decorated his hands and fingers with generous, deliberate spacing, and a small, distinct artistic tattoo peeked just above his crisp white collar.
"The holiday arrangements are absolutely flawless this year, Camille," an older capo remarked, raising his crystal glass of bourbon toward the woman standing at Reid’s side.
"Thank you, Marcus," Camille Drake replied smoothly, her American accent dripping with practiced, aristocratic charm. "I believe Christmas should be a time of overwhelming beauty and perfection. We have so much to celebrate this year."
At twenty-nine, Reid’s fiancée was a vision of high-society perfection. She wore a luxurious emerald evening gown that clung flawlessly to her curves, her fair, rosy skin glowing beneath the warm light. Dazzling diamond earrings swayed gently from her lobes. Her public manner was impeccable, radiating a polished, reassuring smile that effectively masked the cold, calculating, and viciously jealous ambition simmering underneath.
"And how is the syndicate’s business proceeding into the new year, Reid?" Marcus asked, turning his respectful gaze back to the towering boss.
"The business is proceeding exactly as planned, Marcus," Reid replied slowly, his deep, controlled voice cutting effortlessly through the ambient, festive noise of the room. "We are expanding our eastern ports. Stability is our primary objective."

"Excellent to hear," Marcus nodded respectfully, raising his glass in a toast. "To a prosperous new year for the Ashford family."
As the men drank, a subtle disruption rippled through the periphery of the room. Moving through the crowd of elegantly dressed guests was Mara Ellis. At twenty-five, the maid possessed a breathtaking, gentle beauty, with delicate features and bright, highly expressive eyes. But tonight, she moved with a deeply vulnerable, frantic manner. Her fitted black maid dress was noticeably creased, her pristine white apron was rumpled, and her white ruffled maid headband sat entirely crooked in her disheveled hair. She clutched a torn, ruined teddy bear to her chest, her fair skin pale with horror as she desperately searched the room for the little girl she loved as her own.
