Chapter 9

The tension in the ballroom was stretched so tight it felt like a piano wire ready to snap and slice through the crowd. Mr. Sterling stood like a monument of vengeance, cradling the small, sobbing girl in the pink tulle dress against his tuxedo. He did not yell. He did not need to raise his voice to command the absolute terror of every billionaire, politician, and socialite in the room.
He stared at Scarlett, his icy blue eyes stripping away her wealth, her status, and her humanity until there was nothing left but a terrified animal caught in a trap.
"Who touched my granddaughter?" Mr. Sterling asked. The question was quiet, deadly, and rolled through the bright, cinematically lit room with the unstoppable force of an avalanche.
Scarlett swallowed hard, a choking sound escaping her throat. She looked around frantically, desperately hoping someone in the elite crowd would step forward to defend her, to explain that she was from a good family, that it was just a mistake. But the crowd simply stared back at her with blank, horrified expressions. No one was going to die for her couture dress.
"Mr. Sterling... sir... I..." Scarlett stammered, her voice high and nasal, trembling violently. "It was an accident. The child—she ran into me. My dress... it's a very expensive custom piece, and I simply reacted... I didn't mean to hurt her..."
"You reacted," Mr. Sterling repeated, his tone perfectly flat, analyzing the excuse and finding it fatally lacking. He took one slow step forward. The crowd parted even wider, pressing themselves against the walls to avoid being caught in his gravitational pull. "You believed the fabric on your back held more value than the blood in her veins."
"No! No, please, I swear I didn't know who she was!" Scarlett cried, tears of sheer panic finally spilling over her fair, rosy cheeks, ruining her perfect makeup. "If I had known she was a Sterling, I never would have—"
"That is exactly the problem," Vanessa interrupted, her voice slicing through the air like a silver blade.
Vanessa stepped forward, her slender, graceful figure radiating a dark, magnificent power. She stood directly beside her father, her dark brown eyes locked onto Scarlett.
"You thought she was a nobody," Vanessa stated, her American accent dripping with lethal elegance. "You thought because you possessed money, you possessed the right to inflict pain on the vulnerable without consequence. You thought she had no one to protect her."
Vanessa shifted her gaze to Brandon. The man she had called her husband for six years was sweating profusely, his expensive navy-blue suit clinging to his trembling frame.
"And you," Vanessa said softly, the venom in her voice reserved entirely for him. "You watched it happen. You stood there and told me to teach my daughter manners. You told me I was street trash."
Brandon raised his hands in a frantic, pathetic gesture of surrender. "Vanessa, I didn't know! You lied to me! You hid your family from me for six years! If you had just told me who your father was—"
"If I had told you," Vanessa countered coldly, "you would have pretended to love her. I needed to know what kind of man you were when the cameras were off. When there was nothing to gain."
Mr. Sterling looked down at Brandon, his face a mask of absolute disgust. "You allowed a woman to strike my blood, in your own home, and you did nothing."
"Sir, I can fix this! I can make restitution!" Brandon begged, taking a step toward the patriarch.

Two of the massive bodyguards stepped smoothly in front of Brandon, their hands resting casually on the holstered weapons inside their jackets. Brandon froze instantly, his eyes wide with terror.
"There is no restitution for this," Mr. Sterling whispered quietly. "There is only the bill. And it is entirely past due."
