Chapter 7

The string quartet, realizing the immense gravity of the situation unfolding on the floor, abruptly stopped playing. The sudden cessation of music was deafening. Every single conversation in the massive, brightly lit ballroom died instantly. Hundreds of the most powerful people in the country held their breath in collective, stunned silence.
Zoe ran across the polished parquet floor, her small black patent leather shoes pattering loudly in the dead quiet. Her pink tulle dress bounced around her knees, the small tiara reflecting the chandelier light. Tears were still fresh on her cheeks, and the angry red handprint from Scarlett’s slap was glaringly visible on her medium-brown skin.
She ran directly toward the terrifying, silver-haired patriarch. The elite guests watched in absolute, paralyzed horror, expecting Mr. Sterling’s brutal security detail to intercept the child and toss her aside. No one approached Marcus Sterling uninvited. People had disappeared for lesser offenses.
Brandon stood frozen near the ice sculpture, the blood completely draining from his fair, rosy skin. His mind could not process the impending disaster. His stepdaughter was about to crash into the most dangerous man in America.
But the security detail did not move. They stood perfectly still, parting slightly to allow the little girl through.
Mr. Sterling stopped walking. The cold, ruthless mask he wore for the world instantly melted away. He dropped to one knee, ignoring the fact that he was ruining the crease of his bespoke tuxedo trousers on the hard floor. He opened his arms wide.
Zoe threw herself into Mr. Sterling’s arms, colliding with his chest with a soft thud.
"Grandpa!" Zoe cried out, her small arms wrapping tightly around the patriarch’s thick neck. She buried her face in his shoulder, the trauma of the evening finally catching up to her as she began to sob all over again.
"I've got you, little bird. I've got you," Mr. Sterling murmured, his incredibly deep, raspy American accent carrying clearly across the silent ballroom. He wrapped his massive arms around the tiny girl, holding her with a fierce, absolute protection.
A collective gasp rippled through the crowd. The whispers started immediately, a frantic, confused hissing echoing off the walls. Grandpa?
Vanessa stepped out from the shadows of the ice sculpture. She followed a few steps behind her daughter, her stride slow, elegant, and heavy with consequence. She was emotional—her captivating dark brown eyes shimmering slightly at the sight of her father holding her child—but her posture was steady, powerful, and unyielding.
As Vanessa walked into the center of the room, the guests turned in shock, their eyes darting between the light-skinned African American woman in the charcoal pantsuit and the terrifying White American patriarch holding a little girl who shared her exact features. The resemblance in their commanding presence was suddenly undeniable.
Brandon swayed on his feet, his mind violently recalibrating reality. He looked at Vanessa, the woman he had called "street trash" less than three minutes ago. He looked at the faded red thread no longer wrapped around her wrist.
"No," Brandon whispered to himself, a cold, suffocating terror gripping his throat. "No, that's impossible. She's nobody. She's just Vanessa."
But the reality of the situation was unfolding in front of him with brutal clarity.
Zoe pulled her head back from Mr. Sterling’s shoulder. She sniffled loudly, wiping her nose with the back of her hand. She looked up into her grandfather’s fierce blue eyes, finding the absolute safety she needed.

Then, slowly, Zoe turned her head. She raised a small, trembling finger. She pointed directly past Vanessa, directly past Brandon, and leveled her gaze straight at the woman in the emerald-green couture gown.
"Grandpa," Zoe said, her voice echoing perfectly in the absolute silence of the ballroom, sobbing as she pointed behind her. "She’s the lady who hurt me."
