Chapter 10

The grand ballroom, once a symbol of the Hayes family’s incredible wealth and influence, had been transformed in a matter of minutes into an execution chamber of their own making. The bright, pure white lighting glared down on Brandon and Scarlett, offering them no shadows to hide in.

Mr. Sterling gently kissed Zoe’s forehead. "Close your eyes, little bird," he murmured. "Grandpa is going to handle the bad people now."

Zoe obediently buried her face deeper into his neck, her small hands clutching his lapels tightly. She was safe, insulated by the most powerful man in the room.

Mr. Sterling looked up, his gaze sweeping over the crowd of terrified elites. "Everyone in this room is dismissed. You will leave your phones in the coat check. You will walk out the front doors, and you will forget everything you saw here tonight. If a single whisper of my granddaughter's face reaches the press, I will burn your respective empires to the ground."

The guests didn't need to be told twice. A frantic, silent stampede began. Hundreds of people moved quickly and quietly toward the exit, their heads bowed, desperate to escape the blast radius of the Sterling family’s wrath. Within two minutes, the massive ballroom was entirely empty, save for Mr. Sterling, Vanessa, Zoe, Brandon, Scarlett, and the armed security detail.

Brandon fell to his knees on the polished parquet floor. The fabric of his tailored trousers ripped, but he didn't care. "Mr. Sterling, please. Take the firm. Take the bank accounts. Take everything I own. Just let me walk away."

"I am already taking everything you own, Brandon," Vanessa said, stepping up to stand towering over her kneeling husband. The charcoal pantsuit looked like armor in the bright light. "The accounts have been frozen. The board of directors has already been informed of your 'sudden resignation.' You don't have a firm anymore."

Brandon gasped, the reality of his total destruction crashing over him. He looked up at his exceptionally beautiful wife, finally seeing the monster he had been sleeping next to for years.

Scarlett was completely broken, sitting in the puddle of her spilled martini, weeping hysterically, her emerald gown ruined. "What are you going to do to us?" she sobbed.

Mr. Sterling turned slowly, his silver hair catching the chandelier light. He looked at the two broken people on the floor with absolute, chilling apathy.

"I am going to teach you the value of respect," Mr. Sterling said quietly, adjusting his grip on Zoe. "And I am going to ensure that neither of you ever has the capacity to raise a hand to another human being again."

He nodded to his security detail. The four massive men stepped forward in perfect unison, pulling thick, black zip-ties from their pockets.

"Wait! No! Please!" Brandon screamed, thrashing wildly as two of the men grabbed his arms, easily overpowering him and dragging him toward the back service doors of the ballroom.

Scarlett’s screams echoed off the high ceilings as she, too, was hauled to her feet and dragged away into the shadows, her couture dress leaving a trail of spilled alcohol on the floor.

Vanessa didn't flinch at the sound of their desperate, fading cries. She stood perfectly still, her long, silky black hair settling around her shoulders. She looked at her father.

"It's over," Vanessa said softly.

"No, my dear," Mr. Sterling replied, a dark, terrifyingly proud smile touching his lips as he looked at the powerful, commanding woman his daughter had finally become. "The hiding is over. The real work begins tomorrow."

Vanessa looked around the empty, gleaming ballroom. The faded red thread was gone forever. She was Vanessa Sterling once more. She reached out and gently stroked Zoe’s back, a cold, beautiful smile matching her father's.

"Then let it begin," she whispered, as the heavy doors of her old life closed forever.
