Chapter 8

The silence that followed Zoe’s accusation was absolute, a heavy, suffocating vacuum that seemed to draw all the oxygen out of the massive ballroom. Every single eye in the room followed the trajectory of the little girl’s trembling finger, landing squarely on Scarlett.

Scarlett stood near the towering ice sculpture, completely isolated as the guests physically stepped away from her, treating her like a walking corpse. The fair, rosy skin of her face turned a sickening, translucent shade of white. The emerald-green couture gown suddenly looked less like a symbol of wealth and more like a neon target. She opened her mouth to speak, to offer some kind of defense, but her throat had seized completely.

Mr. Sterling did not immediately stand up. He remained on one knee on the polished parquet floor. He reached up with a large, calloused hand and gently, almost reverently, touched the bright red welt blooming on his granddaughter’s medium-brown cheek. His thumb brushed over the swollen skin, his sharp blue eyes analyzing the exact shape and force of the impact.

"She hurt you?" Mr. Sterling asked, his voice incredibly soft, meant only for Zoe.

"She slapped me," Zoe hiccuped, burying her face back into his neck. "Because I spilled punch on her dress."

Mr. Sterling slowly closed his eyes. He took a deep, measured breath, inhaling the air of the ballroom. When he opened his eyes again, the loving grandfather was gone. The terrifying, ruthless titan of the American underworld had returned, and his fury was a physical, radiant heat.

Mr. Sterling tightened his hold on Zoe, lifting her effortlessly into his arms as he stood up to his full height. He turned slowly, his broad shoulders squaring off against the room. His face hardened with terrifying authority, the lines around his eyes deepening into a map of pure violence.

He looked directly at Scarlett.

Scarlett went visibly pale, her knees physically knocking together. The crystal martini glass slipped from her trembling fingers, shattering violently against the hard floor. The sound of breaking glass made several guests jump, but Mr. Sterling didn’t even blink.

Brandon, standing a few feet from Scarlett, was completely frozen. His mind was screaming at him to run, to apologize, to drop to his knees and beg, but his body refused to move. He looked at Vanessa, who had finally reached her father’s side.

Vanessa stood to Mr. Sterling’s right, her charcoal pantsuit perfectly tailored, her long, silky black hair catching the cinematic light. She looked at Brandon with almond-shaped eyes that held absolutely no mercy. She was the heir to the throne, and she was finally claiming her seat.

"Vanessa... please," Brandon mouthed, his American accent completely stripped of its smug, dismissive tone, replaced entirely by pure, whimpering dread.

Vanessa did not respond. She simply tilted her chin up, a silent acknowledgment that he had dug his own grave, and now, he had to lie in it.

The security detail surrounding Mr. Sterling shifted smoothly, fanning out in a wide arc to block any potential escape routes for Brandon or Scarlett. The heavy, gilded doors of the ballroom slammed shut with a terrifying finality, locked from the outside by the operatives Vanessa had called in.

There was no music. There was no arrogant laughter. There was only the sound of shattered glass, a child’s quiet sniffling, and the heavy, impending doom of consequence.

The ballroom stood silent, stunned, the air thick with the realization that someone was about to pay a very high, very bloody price. The reckoning had officially begun, and it was going to be televised to the entire elite class of the city.
